PFF: Poor game from Fisher

Yup. Very poor game.

I’m not in the business of making excuses for someone, but how bad is the hand of Eric Fisher (-4.5)? I ask because his performance was of such a level and he seemed to be favoring his hand so often, that the question had to be asked: are the Chiefs doing the right thing getting him game time as opposed to letting him heal?

He had to leave the field after Will Tukuafu got the better of him with 4:05 to go in the first and yet he would return to finish out the first half. That wasn’t the only time he struggled as Ray McDonald was too powerful for him at the point of attack on the opening drive, having no problem working on his inside shoulder and getting off his blocking attempts.

In pass protection, Parys Haralson (hurry and sack), Corey Lemonier (hurry) and Ahmad Brooks (hurry with an assist from some hands to the face) all got past him, while he failed on two occasions to execute cut blocks on stretch runs.

More is expected of the first overall pick.

And I am not excusing those. I brought up 2 instances where he got beat on a speed rush, one being a coverage sack.

This. As a former college fb (not an offensive lineman, I know) I realize that hand injuries come with the territory when blocking is a major function at your position. But you also have to realize that when blocking IS YOUR EntiRe job, your hands are sort of important. A good example is that I now make a living as an art director. My livelihood depends on the health of my hands. I recently broke my hand and couldn't work for 6 weeks. Sure, hand injuries are a part of being an offensive lineman; but if its a bad enough injury. The guy can't do what he's on the field to do.

And Dorsey didn't care to find that guy. They pigeonholed themselves into a lame pick when they traded for Alex Smith. They bet on our ability to win now with Smith at the helm and saw Fisher as the most talented guy to protect him.

He needs to play like it.
Who were your top 2 in the draft?

It's never a bad year to have the best pick. You can run 30 different guys through and pick the exact one you want. That's the great thing about the #1 overall. You can get crazy and take a RT out of Central Michigan if you want and ****ing nobody can ruin your plan.

There will be accountability. But not after the second damn preseason game.

Before the Alex Smith trade: Geno Smith was the only player I cared about. I didn't see Manuel going first off the board for QB's, I thought that would be Geno. But I wasn't that surprised he went in the first.

After: Tavon Austin had the most upside as a serious playmaker for the Chiefs

What else would you like to talk about?

We've got a week until they play another. I guess we can all pat ourselves on the back for Eric Berry being a Chief. That can only last so long.

This. And I'm never going to be happy with the pick, if Manuel and Geno end up being franchise QBs. So it's going to be very hard for me to say he'll ever justify the pick. But judging whether he ends up a very good right tackle, that's a different argument. And it's way too soon to know what we have, and I still don't understand the difference in his value if he is great next year or if he's great from game 1.

Because we traded away possibly two 2nd's for Alex Smith. That leads me to believe the franchise believes they can compete and win right now with the talent Pioli left on this team.

Fisher needs to be good from the get go if we're going to try and realize that vision.

Dorsey drafted Bulaga in the first round in Green Bay. Didn't even start him until the 5th week of the season. They finally started him at RT. He played there at RT until this season he was set to move to LT.

Did Dorsey see value in letting a first contact tackle play the right side until he was truly ready? Maybe they milk starting first round bookends out until Albert decline.

But the idea that Fisher ends up being a shitty pick if he ends up as a pro bowler in year 2 or 3, but struggles in his first starts, is just plain ludicrous. Why is it so critical to be a star from game 1?
Nobody said he won't wind up a pro bowl tackle. Just right now, he had a long way to go. Also, if winning more is the goal, good luck with that. Alice might not last fall long back there.

I just ask for people to contain the bitching until we see what we have. Continue to talk, but good lord the gloom and doom is unbearable.
