"I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Romeo, both personally and professionally," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. "He is an accomplished coach, a man of great character and he helped guide our football team through some extremely challenging circumstances this season.
"However, I am embarrassed by the poor product we gave our fans this season, and I believe we have no choice but to move the franchise in a different direction. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Chiefs. The entire football operation will remain under review, and there may be additional changes to come. No final determination has been made at this point on the future of General Manager Scott Pioli. "Finally, I want to personally apologize to our fans for our performance this season. We are blessed to play for some of the best and most passionate fans in the National Football League and they deserve better than what we gave them this season. I want our fans to know that I will do everything I can to provide them with a dramatically better team - both next season and in the seasons to come - and our entire organization appreciates their support." Jake Reed doesn't count. His offenses were mostly Chris Carter and scrap. He didn't have Moss until his last season in Minnesota. He was leading one of the most prolific offenses in football with little more than the dried up husk of Warren Moon, the flat tires of Robert Smith and Chris Carter. He had considerably less to work with in Minnesota than Dabol had to work with in KC this season for 80% of his tenure in Minn and he put up offenses that ranked in the top 1/3 of the league in 3 of those 4 seasons. C'mon - Billick knew his shit and I don't think he just forgot it.

What I mean by this is that being a great OC, which Billick has shown he is, is about being cerebral. Head coaches must necessarily be involved in too many other facets, and thus his expertise on the offensive side doesn't get to surface as much. Hell, look at his time in Baltimore. The knock was always that his offense underachieved and that it was a team carried by its defense. Bad year, good year. Rinse, repeat. Schedule champions with no playoff success.
