Clark Hunt Statement

"I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Romeo, both personally and professionally," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. "He is an accomplished coach, a man of great character and he helped guide our football team through some extremely challenging circumstances this season.

"However, I am embarrassed by the poor product we gave our fans this season, and I believe we have no choice but to move the franchise in a different direction. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Chiefs. The entire football operation will remain under review, and there may be additional changes to come. No final determination has been made at this point on the future of General Manager Scott Pioli.

"Finally, I want to personally apologize to our fans for our performance this season. We are blessed to play for some of the best and most passionate fans in the National Football League and they deserve better than what we gave them this season. I want our fans to know that I will do everything I can to provide them with a dramatically better team - both next season and in the seasons to come - and our entire organization appreciates their support."

The directive is no one from the football operations side is to speak until their final notice has been given either with a termination or a return.

Clark is trying to force Pioli's hand and have him quit. Clark had a heated discussion with Scott this morning according to this email. Clark told him he won't have any say in this head coach because "this head coach will be here longer than you will".

Then there's this piece of info. Clark talked with Peyton Manning at length Sunday night. He wanted to know why the Chiefs weren't considered and everything Peyton said pointed the finger squarely on Pioli. Said Pioli's rep across the league is terrible. His inability to foster a "team" environment instead of one ruled like a dictator was huge too.

This really pissed Clark off. I said in a previous post that the loss could have triggered all of this, but it's apparent the PM discussion could have as well.

I'm completely shocked to say the least. Everything, and I mean everything, I've been told paints Clark as someone with a school boy crush on Pioli.

Clark wants to make a splash. He also wants to save the money from just firing Pioli. With all the lawsuits that former employees have pending against the Chiefs that list Pioli, Clark may have a case to fire him with definite cause.

Source said that Clark changed overnight toward Pioli.

Take it for what it's worth.

So Clark's going to play a game of chicken with Pioli?

Clark needs to hire a HC, and it appears the tune Clark is singing is to hire a HC and give all personnel control to him.

To do that, means to fire Pioli - which means buying him out.

To haggle with Pioli means we're not hiring anyone anytime soon.

I don't see Pioli rolling over, so it seems like a gigantic waste of time and energy to wait for it to happen.

It needs to happen ASAP - get the new staff in and get working towards the most important draft in the history of the franchise.

I don't have a problem with the HC model.

The HC is going to coach the talent and the HC should be comfortable with the GM.

The old way gave Pioli way too much power.

I'm not so sure it failed in Philly, or that it just ran it's course.

I listened to Petro's entire interview. Ths is how I understood Clark's statements.

1) Clark is hiring the new coach personaly.
2) New coach and GM will report directly to him. Coach does not report to GM now.
3) Clark is pissed because Chiefs were 3rd highest cash spenders in league and only won two games.
4) AFTER he hires coach he will cirlcle back and kick pioli in the nuts but for now he wants to hire one befor all the good coaches are gone.

My opinion (stolen from my smart wife) He can't cook Pioli's nuts until they work out a settlement. He wants him gone but doesn't want to pay him 14 million to leave either.

BTW great info and thank you for sharing it.

And thanks to Peyton for being the final nail in Pioli's coffin. How fitting..

You could say that about a lot of coaches.

The kind of coach we all really want doesn't really exist on the open market. They're locked up in Green Bay and New Orleans and the like.

I havent read through this thread yet, but after listening to whats on KCChiefs.com and just the snippets that have been replayed of his talk on the radio, this is what I came away with from Clark Hunt:

1) He is listening to everything we have posted on here and is making a genuine effort to appease US.

2) He had already signed Pioli to an extension and is trying to find out what he needs to do to not have to pay him the whole extension. I have NO DOUBTS that Pioli has already been fired, or has had both nuts cut off.

3) Bill Cowher or Andy Reid WILL BE the next HC of the Chiefs. It will be a coach/gm combo guy that will give Pioli two choices....get behind me and do what I tell you/get the **** out.

4) Clark seems that he wants to play a MUCH BIGGER role in this teams future and its day to day operations.

Now, Ill go read through this and try to listen to the interview and see if those things effect my thoughts on this....see you guys in awhile, but Ill keep one window open for refreshing the last page and reading through this beast.

I think this is a good deal, so far.

The team is going to hire a HC sooner than later. The Pioli stuff has nothing to do with the HC hire.

I think the issue is a lot bigger with the lawsuits pending against the Chiefs and Pioli. Clark is getting counseled by his legal team obviously.

There's no way Pioli is back. There has to be some legal reason why it hasn't happened yet.

I said this coaching thing was going to be exactly like the Peyton Manning snub because I thought it was obvious how badly Pioli is hated around the league, besides his father in law, Belichick and Dimitroff lol
