With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

We gave up a ton to get him (probably too much), but lets not pretend Shields isn't a stud. Also, we have an actual major league rotation for the first time in my years as a fan. I'm excited about that and ready to watch some meaningful baseball after the all star break.

Just surprised to see him on the list of the top prospects in baseball in a given year. He must have had better stuff at one point than he does now (or really, since he entered the majors).

Obviously most of those guys turned out great, but there were plenty of other relative failures on there.

They got a quality (probably underselling him actually) starter in a trade. As the guy on the radio just said, when is the last time we could say "Royals" and "blockbuster" in the same sentence?

That remains to be seen. I can just about guarantee you that the Royals don't trade away all of this club control, though, unless they intended to put Davis in the rotation.

When they traded Greinke away. But this is a completely different kind of trade.

Deal is still tough to like, but a little easier to swallow in the light of day.

It still comes down to winning now. The Royals are taking a bold swing at that.

I will still maintain that KC could have gotten a similar bump just from playing Wil Myers everyday in RF rather than Francoeur, but that DOES also assume Francoeur is as bad in 2013 as he was in 2012. Even if Francoeur is just a replacement-level guy (what he has been in his career, basically) in 2013, that's worth almost 3 wins.

A lot of things still have to break KC's way to make the playoffs in 2013, but fewer of them than at this time yesterday.

If KC makes the playoffs and Davis is better over the next several years than Odorizzi, then I can live with this. Risky move on Moore's part, but risky in the right direction (I guess).

Our offense was 12th in the AL last year. Need major season upgrades from Hosmer and Moose to make a run at .500.
