With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Nobody truly knows if this is a bad trade yet. If Myers and Odo end up below avg MLB players or dont pan out then its fine. I think Myers should however make some AllStar games. Not sold on Odo but I doubt he would have been any worse than Wade and he is controllable and cheaper. Two yrs of Schields is not worth giving up Myers. I wouldnt think we came out bad if it was Price and someone other than Wade. Only good news is we should be better next yr. DM clearly trying to save his job and I guess he thinks if we are in the hunt for a wildcard spot weeks from the end of the season that it will be enough. This team still shouldn't make the playoffs.

Bottok line this is an extremely short sided trade. It makes us better next yr only...but certainly worse for the next three.

If this was for David Price....I wouldn't be pissed. But James ****ing Shields? A 30-yr old solid at best #2 starter on any team that actually cares about winning. This guy is 30yrs old and has only 2 yrs left on his deal and there is no way he's staying around longer than that.

So now that it's a done deal, is there any chance Davis found something in the pen that he can carry back into the rotation? His K rate skyrocketed in the pen, which isn't all that unusual. But perhaps he can bring a bit back into his role in the rotation. Maybe he helps make this deal less of a train wreck.

What I expect to happen for this trade:

James Shields is a 3-4 WAR pitcher for KC for two years (3.50-3.75 ERA, 200 IP, 180K), walks at the end of this deal, gets a qualifying offer, and ends up resulting in a comp pick for KC.

Wade Davis continues to be underwhelming when tried as a starter and ends up being an effective reliever for KC.

The PTBNL is not anyone exciting.

Wil Myers posts 3-4 30 HR seasons in the next 6 years as a full-timer starter for Tampa and makes the All-Star team 4 times.

Mike Montgomery figures it out and becomes a strong member of the Rays rotation by 2014.

Pat Leonard continues to show great power and is a top 50 prospect by the time Shields walks.

Jake Odorizzi makes more effective starts over the course of the Davis/Odorizzi contracts than Davis does.
