With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Here's how ****ing stupid DM is: Last year, Shields was a 2.2 WAR player. If Myers provides even average play in RF, he'd be worth approximately 4 WAR.

Oh, and Shields is more expensive and controlled for fewer years. Dayton ****ing Moore, ladies and gentlemen.

Our reluctance to spend big money to fill holes is nauseating enough. If it starts to eat into our pool of young talent, then **** this team.

So after you have him for 2 years do you even want to resign him at age 33 until he's, what, 35, 36?

OK, general message to the world: yes, pitching is at a premium now. All things being equal, a pitching WAR is > than a hitting WAR in a non-premium defensive position.

But lets not get rediculous. At WORST, Myers will be a decent player in RF, might occasionally go to the all star game, nice long career bouncing from team to team. At best, he's a possible future HOF'er. The expected value is somewhere in between, which is pretty damned awesome, even if its just RF.

Even given that the first 2 years of Myers might be less than his peak and his 3rd year might be below his peak as well before he erupts in 2016-2018, that is not equal to 2 years of a #2 pitcher.

Shields has a $1M buyout for '14, so we can exercise that and trim payroll for '14 for our next "youth movement," so that's a positive.

So if you trade Will Myers for Jaime Shields, you'll be trading him for a player that has the same approximate value of Jeff Francoeur in 2011.

Yeah, that sounds like a good deal...

It's OK to eat into the prospects pool. It's just this particular prospect that would be foolish to trade for a couple of years (probably only 1.5 years, after which a trade would happen) of Shields.

By young talent, I meant the core players that are helping or will help the team in the imminent future (Myers, Hos, Moose, salvy, escobar, etc.). I should have specified.
