With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Heres' my take on Esky. He's got such great range that he reaches a lot of balls average ss's can't even reach. When you can do more than an average player at your position you are bound to make a few errors. When Jeter can't reach a ball it's just a base hit. Esky can reach balls many others can't and he gets penalized for it by not playing every one of those perfectly and sometimes getting an error... a bad throw in a hurry, a ball off his glove that he keeps in the infield etc.. He may not make every play but since he can reach balls others can't he opens himself up to more opportunity to be less than perfect. I'll take him over an average ss every day of the week.

This is a classic case of stats not telling the story of talent.

Olney says today he is hearing the Royals probably try to move a bat for some pitching help (Hosmer, Gordon, Butler, Moustakas, Myers).

According to what he's hearing, Hosmer has the most value of those guys (which justifies a lot of my stance from earlier this year that Hosmer's retained value was much higher amongst baseball people and execs than amongst the average baseball fan, Royals or not).

Makes a trade match up with the Rays much, much better.

I'll say this... 2013 is the last chance to get positive traction (or keep moving it forward) for Glass and Moore. Whatever they do in the offseason, it had better work.

If they want to go bargain basement with a bunch of guys, they had better find enough to make it work. Otherwise, they're going to lose even the most optimistic fans.

Moustakas's increased range also took away a good number of "easier" range plays that Escobar was able to make a year ago (balls where he comes in and to his right). This hurt his zone rating a bit (hopefully, next year they adjust by playing Escobar shaded a step or two to the middle).

Good point. Sadly sometimes you get "hurt" by being well rounded on one side like that.
