With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

That is a haul for two months of Broxton. Moore cannot do many things well, however he has proven effective at trading one year deal free agents for talent.

Joseph is an intriguing guy.

Third-round pick in 2009. Great this year, great every other year in minors except for jump to AA in 2010. Looks like his control is OK for a high K guy (around 3.4) but could use some improvement.

12.1 K/9 for his career.

Hard to get excited about a guy that is in AA after 4 years, and has unimpressive numbers there. Now that I hear we got Joseph as well, I'm good with it.

It's about perspective.

What the Royals gave up was NOT that valuable (Shiny ERA aside). Two months of a setup man. Broxton ranks BELOW a guy like Dotel when traded in terms of 1/2 season value.

In return, they got a HIGH-K lefty they can slide into the bullpen if/when they move Mijares and a RHP with tremendous stuff. Worst-case scenario, Sulbaran can contribute as a 6th/7th inning guy out of the pen. With the reports on his stuff that I'm seeing, he can be really effective in that role.

Best-case scenario, he gets the walks under control (likely would require some delivery work/changes) and becomes a Felipe Paulino-type starter.

Broxton was a very good signing for Moore, IMO.

You get a pretty decent first half of baseball and then flip him for a couple of top 15 prospects from another organization who are controllable for several years. I really like deals like this.

Being a team like the Royals it would be one of the things I would try to do each year. Target a guy with upside that might be a good flip and sign him to a one year deal. Then trade for prospects.
