With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Sulbaran sounds like a decent pickup, but may ultimately be bullpen bound in his own right. A reliever can survive erratic control if the stuff is there (Frieri is a great example), and throwing across his body will be less likely to get him injured if he throws fewer fatigued pitches (i.e. pitches 70+).

Better than nothing; Broxton had no future in KC. Not a bad move at all for Moore.

We wouldn't have kept Broxton anyway, he was Free Agent at end of year. Guess that makes Holland our closer for the rest of the season.

Are you trolling?

If not, Jon Broxton - despite his ERA, which is lucky and unsustainable - is about the fifth-best guy in the Royals bullpen. Holland, Crow, Collins all easily better. EDIT: And Kelvin Herrerra, too.

This is the exact purpose Broxton was signed for - a 1/2 season of insurance at the closer spot, to be moved at deadline for best piece available.

Definitely fits the profile Moore's staff looks for. Good size, plus stuff. And, with that plus stuff, control issues.

If he's mid-90s with good off-speed pitch as a starter, that's likely upper 90s as a reliever.

You can never have too many live arms for the bullpen, so even if that's all he is... cheap, long-term controlled guy in the bullpen - that's not a bad return for Broxton.

If he develops into anything more... congrats, you won the lottery.

The Kansas City Royals finally traded Jonathan Broxton at the MLB trade deadline to the Cincinnati Reds, a late entry into the field of those rumored to be interested. Now the terms have been disclosed as the Royals receive J.C. Sulbaran in return for their closer this season.

Sulbaran was the Reds 30th round selection in the 2008 MLB Draft. Now 22-years-old, Sulbaran is currently 7-7 with a 4.04 ERA in AA for Cincy.

Broxton was one of the better free agent signings for Dayton Moore over the years with a 1-2 record to go with a 2.27 ERA and 23 saves while taking over for Joakim Soria, who underwent his second Tommy John surgery earlier this season.
