2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: ![]() Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

You Make The Call Night... You can't do any worse than Ned so we'll put multiple choice questions on the scorboard and let YOU THE FANS decide on bunting or hitting situations, who warms up in the bullpen and when, when pitching changes should be made, when and who should pinch hit...
This could also be called "Best Chance To Win All Week Night."

My wife made a comment last night that I've been thinking about ... she commented that it seems like the Royals have had an awful lot of bad luck this season. Thinking about it, I was trying to tally up all the things that would count in that category, and all the "good break" things.
I'll start with "Good," as that list will be much shorter: Good Breaks Mike Moustakas's breakout season (both sides of ball) Sal Perez continuing to hit Wil Myers' bouncing back Jon Broxton pitching well enough to be tradeable at the deadline Billy Butler breakout as a true HR threat Alcides Escobar's offensive evolution Bad Breaks Joakim Soria's elbow Danny Duffy's elbow Felipe Paulino's elbow Jeff Francouer regressing to a worse state than ever before Jon Sanchez being completely unrecovered from his issues with velocity/command Mike Mongtomery's continued downward spiral Eric Hosmer's early season luck and ever-since struggles Sal Perez's knee injury Manny Pina's knee injury Injuries to Getz/ineffectiveness of Gio (in limited action) leading to much-increased role for Betancourt Lorenzo Cain's hip-flexor Collapse of Chris Dwyer Even Alex Gordon's performance. He's still a well-above average player, probably the best LF in the American League. He has established himself as a dangerous leadoff man, even if most of his HR have turned into 2B. Lorenzo Cain since returning. Even at 80-90 percent, Cain's defense is as good as advertised (though his range suffers) and his bat has been a nice surprise in the 2nd half. Luke Hochevar pitching like Luke Hochevar Bruce Chen reverting. I believed coming into the year that there was enough evidence on Chen to suggest is new approach in KC made him a solid MOR starter. His peripherals are actually better this year than in the past... but is he being asked to do too much? The biggest damage against Chen seems to have been in the 6th/7th innings, when he is asked to stretch out to save the overtaxed bullpen. With a better rotation around him and a less taxed bullpen, does Chen look more like the guy from the past two seasons? In sum... while the Royals have caught some bad breaks, this is more of an indictment to the way this season was approached.

Look, I know Myers had some things to work on... and yes, young hitters have to figure out how to hit when pitched backwards. But considering that Eric Hosmer needed to work on the same things (obviously) and they still promoted him to replace a struggling regular (who, by the way, was a better defender at his position and a more valuable offensive player than Frenchy this season). Difference is that Moore hated Ka'ahuie and loves Francouer. As folks on here probably remember, I am no Kila lover. In fact, he played out about as I always expected/predicted. The mishandling of Myers is just flat-out dumb. It's too bad next year's MLB draft pool is not that impressive... because the Royals are playing their way back into the NO. 2 spot.

Wait, Moore passed on a chance to get a guy who is really, really fast and plays CF (though not very well) and is a below average hitter?
WTF?
