As he settles in with the Broncos, Peyton Manning is learning the rules of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, including that he can work out with teammates, but only away from the team’s facilities and outside the watchful eyes of the coaches. And that’s exactly what Manning did today.

Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post reports that Manning took snaps from center J.D. Walton and threw passes to wide receiver Eric Decker and tight end Julius Thomas during a session at a Denver-area high school, and afterward Decker said he liked what he saw.

“He looked real good, though he probably won’t admit that he’s feeling good or feeling back to the way he wants to be,” Decker said.

Decker said Manning is trying to get comfortable with his new teammates now, and that the players who were on the roster last year are talking to him about the offensive concepts the Broncos employed — even though the offense will be quite a bit different with Manning running it in 2012.

“Just some drill work, talking through stuff, so he gets familiar with the verbage and the calls,” Decker said. “The biggest thing is he wanted to get a feel for us, and a feel for being under center.”

The Denver Post published 23 photos from today’s session. To the extent that you can tell anything from a still photo of a guy throwing a pass in sweats and a T-shirt, Manning looks pretty much like he has always looked.

Broncos fans welcomed Peyton Manning to his first training camp in Denver with record attendance and all kinds of excitement. He has energized the organization and its fan base. But as we alluded to in our Denver Broncos season preview, unanswered questions about the 36-year-old quarterback remain.

Manning, who underwent four separate neck surgeries between March 2 of 2010 and September 9 of 2011, didn’t do a whole lot of deep-ball passing in OTAs and minicamps. In early July, Mike Klis of the Denver Post guessed Manning was 85 to 90 percent healthy, before suggesting Peyton might never rediscover the remaining 10 to 15 percent. Manning’s arm strength is a question mark, and he hasn’t answered it yet in training camp.

“Manning has looked better than most people believed he would so far,” ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported on SportsCenter Monday morning. ”But here is a little bit of context: Yes, he’s looked good at the line of scrimmage. His balls have had zip. And the majority of them have been caught. But most of those balls have been short and intermediate, with only a handful of them long.”

Manning is on a pitch count in camp, and it sounds like one of his limitations is a cap on deep-ball tries. So while the entirety of Denver is thrilled with its new quarterback, fans and league observers may not know the extent of what remains in Manning’s tank until he plays extensively in a preseason game.

The Broncos’ exhibition opener is set for Thursday, August 9 at Chicago.

Manning was peppering passes to the sideline, showing good zip and velocity on his throws. Most throws were tight spirals and his arm didn’t show any sign of fatigue. Manning even threw across the field to WR Demaryius Thomas on an out route. That is arguably the second most difficult throw to make in the NFL (behind the 25-yard deep comeback). He showed great control on his passes, often putting the ball on the correct shoulder in stride.

Another clinic by Manning, although Champ Bailey had a stronger performance today. Ran great play fakes, and was able to draw the defense offsides with his barking cadence many times. Throws a nice fade route in the back corner of the end zone and guys like Joel Dreesen, Eric Decker, Jacob Tamme, and Demaryius Thomas took advantage. The wind started gusting towards the end of practice and Manning was still zipping the ball around the field. Manning trusts his arm, and will throw into incredibly tight windows.

Peyton Manning – Had to move inside to the practice bubble because of the lightning, and Manning put on a show. Any questions about his arm strength were squelched (again) when he overthrew Jason Hill on a ‘9’ route down the left sideline. He is able to get the defense to jump offsides with his commanding cadence, and did a nice job adjusting to what he saw pre-snap. Executed a picture perfect play action pass to Eric Decker. Pass sailed about 45-yards and split two defenders for the TD. Manning’s window was less than the size of a basketball hoop but he put it right in Decker’s hands, splitting Tracy Porter and Quinton Carter. Plenty of zip on his passes to Demaryius Thomas all over the field. Fantastic day from Manning, Thomas, and Decker.

It sounds like Manning is trying to prepare everyone by tempering their expectations. No arm strength means no deep ball which means Berry and every other safety can play that much closer to the line of scrimmage.

No. Also, its not just about throwing it deep yardage wise, its about having velocity and strength to get it there quicker and on a lower trajectory. Denver doesn't have burners at WR so he will have to throw perfect passes that get their quickly to get downfield completions. The longer the ball takes to get there, the easier it is for the secondary to adjust and break up the play.

He can still throw with velocity deep. Every report I have read has said all of his passes have zip.

And if you look at Manning's stats he has only thrown 8 balls that have traveled 40 yards or longer since 2007. That averages out to two a season. No. Big. Deal.

In Peyton's best year as a pro ( the one where he threw 49 TD's) he only threw 1 pass that traveled over 40 yards.
