2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: ![]() Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

I wonder what the pricetag would be on King Felix. (purely as a matter of curiousity, not that I think it would happen.)

Well, we've reached the part of the season where I root for my fantasy players against the Royals above all else. Since the Royals' win total no longer matters.
So its good that I have King Felix in all of my leagues this year. Francouer benching is about 2 months too late, but it's the little things, right? I'll watch closely through the deadline and continue to watch the minors closely. But the MLB team is probably not getting much game-to-game attention this year unless/until Myers and Gio come up. I'll watch the trades closely. They need to increase some depth at the higher levels and improve trade positioning in the offseason. I still hold out hope that Broxton and Mijares will bring back something interesting. And as for Dayton Moore... I've been giving him until 2013 for everything to come together and them to be a REAL contender. I'll continue to extend that courtesy, though his job is much tougher at this point. They MUST acquire at least 2 No. 2/3 types this offseason. I think the Dayton Moore trade history criticism is really unwarranted, at least for the level of criticism he receives. Yes, yes, I realize Leo Nunez/Mike Jacobs and Melky Cabrera/Jon Sanchez are fresh in everyone's mind, but Moore has only made one trade with a really valuable, highly desirable piece (Zack Greinke). He definitely got a great return on that deal. And before you call Melky desireable, remember that they tried REALLY hard to move him at the deadline last season, including to some teams that REALLY needed a bat, and no one was interested. That's not just about the price they were asking for... The rest of the trades have been "My crap for your crap" or "My moderately OK player for yours." There's plenty to criticize with the guy without unfairly criticizing his trade history.

I really really like how DM has built the farm system. But his ability to acquire major league starting pitching has been pretty poor. On the other hand, having Paulino and Duffy's arms fall off at the same time is pretty unfortunate. Wil Smith is really coming on, based on what I'm seeing. Dwyer/Monty are looking increasingly like they won't work out. Odorizzi looks like a AAAA pitcher to me, but I will watch again tonight and see if he changes my mind. Ventura/Adams/Rodgers are all looking good at their low-levels of pitching and maybe that's where DM is ultimately planning on deriving his rotation. Hopefully Zimmer is ready sooner than later. DM will ultimately be successful in the major leagues, imo. He identifies too much talent not too. But he needs Glass to let go of the purse strings to make a run, though. Just commit 40 million to the pitching staff and watch a 40 game swing year-over-year.

Will Smith, to me, is an internal, cheap back-end option. Those are valuable. Odorizzi is an internal 3/4 option. I know Jasons thinks he's an ace, but even if he's just a 3, Odo still has value. And from there, in order of level (other than Dwyer/Montgomery): Ventura Sugar Ray Marimon (AA - doesn't have overwhelming stuff but could be a solid back-end guy. Made a BIG jump from 2010 to 2011. ) THose are both guys who could jump up to help next year. But beyond that, not much help for 2013. Jason Adam is probably the only interesting guy to watch at Wilmington now, but I have heard reports he's starting to use his stuff more effectively and K more guys. Seems to be getting stronger as the year goes on (Schaum chalks this up to long-toss, it seems). Angel Baez is a name to watch that hasn't gotten much play on here. He's been getting rave reviews at Kane County and has tremendous upside. Kyle Zimmer looked good in his first start at Kane County, but even if he's a quick riser, hard to picture him being anything more than a September call-up in 2013. Kyle Smith and Bryan Brickhouse are both at Kane County, too. Smith could move quickly, and I think he'll sail until he hits AA. He's a kid who is already probably maxed out physically, so not sure he's as good as his early results. Brickhouse is not going to move as quickly, but has much more upside. Sam Selman has been a stud at Idaho Falls and I imagine they'll move him aggressively next season. The rest of the 2012 draftees (Rodgers, Fairchild) will probably be moved more slowly. The Royals are stacked with high-upside guys at Kane County and especially at Rookie ball on both sides of the ball. The Burlington Royals particularly have a ton of talent. Starling everyone knows about, but fellow OF Fred Ford has been just as impressive defensively and offensively. Ford was an under-radar JUCO guy and early results indicate he might end up being a diamond in the rough. There's not a lot of help on the way immediately. The Royals are going to have to spend some dough to get better at the SP next year, the team's only glaring weakness. Here's a name we haven't mentioned before... but Kevin Millwood is a FA I could see Moore bringing in. I'd prefer to see that as the third guy added to the rotation. He's been a quality pitcher the past few years, he has ties to Moore, and he'd be a a nice fit as the experienced vet mentoring the young guys.

I wish I could watch some of the Burlington/Kane County games. Fred Ford recently made Baseball america's hot prospect sheet. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 30 organizational next year.

I'm with you on Burlington/Kane County. Wilmington and NWA are feeling the burn of the college-heavy draft in 2010, which has left them pretty barren. Not much desire to watch them. Orlando Calixte, Cuthbert and Adam are Royals top 30 guys I can think of at Wilmington, though Brooks Pounders is intriguing (the Royals picked him up off the scrap heap and are letting him train the way he wants, something the Pirates did not allow). I suspect Brett Eibner will go back to pitching next season. And NWA... I guess you've got Colon and Ventura and Marimon and not much else. Justin Marks is mildly interesting, but is topped out as a back-end rotation guy. And Mike Montgomery is like Lord Voldemort to me. I just don't want to talk about the guy.

I'm gonna tune in to Omaha after the Royals game. MLB.tv comes with MiLB.tv. Pretty sweet deal, really.

Odorizzi was just giving up good contact early in his last start. I had a terrible angle on MiLB.tv at that park, so I couldn't tell what pitch it was.
