With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Well, yeah, I'm aware of the Cano deal. It just seemed a little like pandering on his part when I first read it. But thinking about it, I know Guthrie's pretty straightforward so I'm sure he didn't mean it that way.

If he hits the corners at the knees with the fastball he'll be very popular, regardless of Tweetage. I'm rooting for him.

I have a bet with my best friend, who is a major Twins fan and a huge baseball nerd. We bet $100 that the Royals will make the playoff by the year 2015. He is very high on the Royals and he is on the side of the bet that says the Royals WILL make the playoffs, I am the one who says they won't.

So what should I spend my $100 on when the year 2015 comes around? Thanks!

Well.. the A's swept the Yankees. If you would have asked me before the season if the Royals were going to have a worse record than the A's I would have told you that you were out of your mind. However.... it is going to happen.

Diamondbacks rightfielder Justin Upton hasn’t drawn as much interest as expected. The Pirates obviously have a great deal of interest in him but find the asking price was prohibitive. Pittsburgh may also be interested in B.J. Upton of the Rays and they inquired on Billy Butler of the Royals and the Phillies' Shane Victorino.

If the Royals move Gordon or Butler, forget it. Pack it in. The organization will never win shit under Glass's ownership.

The only reason you move a player like this is if you have to because the owner will not open his pocket in FA. Otherwise, there is no valid reason for the Royals to do anything to weaken the ML roster in search of pitching.

If a move like what's speculated above happens, Kansas Citians have to become creative in an attempt to force Glass to sell. Shame? Beg? Pester? I'm not sure. And if the team moves? Not a single **** should be given.

The Pirates have enough elite pitching prospects to make a worthwhile deal for Butler, imo. Taillon, Cole, Heredia...

Why trade our best hitter when we can simply buy a viable starter?

Any trade involving Butler, short of a Walker-like return, would be indefensible.

Pirates probably wouldn't trade for Billy, the only place you could play him is at first. And he's not that good as a first baseman. If the Royals did trade him, that would be the coup de gras of kicking the fans in the teeth. The team makes a big deal out of Billy all year up to the ASG, then deal him. That would be the perfect piss down the back.

I think this off-season could be a crossroads for a lot of Royals fans.

There is simply no excuse: Glass must spend a good chunk of money in FA. Will he do it?

It would have to be a massive return. But those are three elite pitching prospects. I am an advocate of standing pat and PAYING two ace level starters so we can make a run next year. Sign Greinke and Hamels and we will be pennant contenders.
