With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

What I would do now:

Call up Teaford, Odo, and Montgomery. Sanchez, Mazzaro, and Mendoza don't make another start. I don't know where the latter three are in terms of options, but Mendoza, for sure, would be valuable in long relief.

And, obviously, Dyson cannot be allowed to continue to play CF. Myers should be in KC tomorrow.

This Cabrera-for-Sanchez trade may go down as one of the worst trades not only in the history of the Royals, but in the history of baseball.

I'm of the opposing view. This season is done. They just do not have the starting pitching to compete. I would feel the same way even if they somehow luckboxed to being 1 game back. It just won't happen. I'm fine with letting Odorizzi and Meyers stay down in AAA until mid August, even the rest of the year if they regress. No reason to rush them now, this team will not compete. I'd cut Sanchez, and point and laugh as he does the walk of shame to the parking lot to his beloved Lamborghini.

Which is why they should get some different starting pitchers, which is what Deez said. Duh.

The season doesn't need to be done if you improve the starting pitching. Odo, Monty and Teaford couldn't do any worse than what we saw this weekend. If they fail then at least you tried while shortening their learning curve going forward. Sanchez and Mazzaro don't deserve to be on a MLB roster so give their spots to someone who might. Dyson playing while Myers owns AAA is a joke. Even with the terrible weekend it's not even AS break time yet and we're still in striking distance. Want to show the fans and the rest of the players you care about winning and expect it now? Improve the team now.

And we don't need 3 ****ing catchers. Give Q his walking papers and move on. Get an extra arm in our worn out bullpen to take his roster spot.

My proposed plan has nothing to do with this year, really. And it wouldn't be rushing anyone.

ned yost has some sort of man-love boner for hummey. really don't see why he's with the club. is he even hitting his weight?

Only one I don't get is Monty? The guy has really regressed, with his K's down drastically and his walks up. He's not ready (may never be, which may be why you're saying time to let him sink or swim?).

I don't think he is but even if he is he's a liability defensively. He has no place in MLB.

He's been up and down, no question. However, when he performed at his best is when he was projected possibly to leave Spring Training with the club two years ago. Instead, he was sent down, and he's never again lived up to the hype.

I'm for taking a bit of a risk in the idea that he's a "gamer" and would rise to the challenge. If not, **** it; we know what we have in him as a starter and might try to milk some value out of him as a reliever.
