With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Honestly?

I don't give a flying f*** what his record is.

I care what type of ERA and ERA+ he posts, whether his BABIP and BAA stats stay the same as they have the past two years.

I care about his walk ratios.

Those are the true indicators of a pitcher's value. Plenty of pitchers have put up crappy W totals while pitching on great teams. Plenty have put up gaudy W totals while pitching on shitty teams.

Wins are the most worthless stat in baseball. Worse even than saves, in my opinion.

Hey, I like Chen. He's one of the positives we've had in this crap fest month. Will he keep it up? His history says no. He's a journeyman, and he's been injury prone. He's just not the kind of guy you can build a contender on, and he certainly shouldn't be your #1. That should be Hoch, but Hoch is way too inconsistent.

Here's how much I hate Ws as a stat...

I think Quality Starts is about the dumbest statistical invention in baseball, especially considering it is a new stat and makes no adjustment for year-to-year trends (i.e., it would be much better if the pitcher had to have an ERA for the game equal to or lower than the league average ERA for that year to count it as a quality start).

And I would still place more value in it over Ws.

Something I'd add...

George, you're too much of a baseball fan to limit yourself to a 1980s way of thinking about it. Statistics don't replace everything, but they can add a lot of targeted insight to your enjoyment of the game.

Chen is really terribly underrated. Now whether he'd be doing the same thing in the Yankees rotation, I don't know. But he's been rocking it pretty solid for a couple years now. The guy posted a 3.77 ERA in the American League last year. That's pretty tough. Especially when you don't strike anyone out.

But on the flipside, if he even posted a 4 ERA for the Yankees, he'd probably have a winning record... so there's that.

B) His career ERA is 4.48. That is not really around 5 at all, actually.
C) He is 0-2? Is that a serious complaint? Do you know anything about baseball at all?
D) You named six teams out of thirty. That is 1/5 of the teams, not 3/4. Continue...
