With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

So on the ESPN broadcast last night (which sucked, BTW), they were talking about Gordon & Perez's new extensions and what it would take to lock up Hosmer long-term. Apparently agents around the league say it'd have to be around 10 years, $90 mil.

They didn't really follow up on it (or at least I didn't hear it) or say if there was any interest by either party in doing so, but just an interesting tidbit. If he works out like we all think he will, I'd do just about anything to see him in KC long term, but am not holding my breath...

I vaguely remember reading that Hosmer responded once, someone asked him if he'd be willing to sign a long-term deal now, and he said something like he wasn't sure how he'd react to such an offer, and he might be willing to discuss it. Not sure if he was saying things the interviewer wanted to hear, or if that was genuine.

I heard the broadcasters say something about a shirt Bruce Chen has been wearing; maybe as an undershirt or something.


It says something like," DominateChen" on it.

Any idea if this shirt is actually available; or it's just something he made as a joke?

Because I would most certainly buy one if they were legit

I took it like it was a real shirt he wears under his uni. No idea if they're available. I think they said on the back it has "blew by you 83" or maybe "blue... by you 83" as in mph. They were talking about how self depricating he is.

Well this was from the end of February after Perez signed his deal.

You probably know that Hosmer’s agent is Scott Boras. You probably know that Boras is typically as open to his clients signing long-term extensions before hitting free agency as he would be beginning each day with a car wreck.

So, logic would tell you the Royals’ desire to sign Eric Hosmer to a long-term deal is like my desire to dunk on a regulation hoop: a cool thought made impossible by reality.

Or, at least, that’s what I thought when I approached Hosmer about this and asked, straight up, if he is more open to signing a long-term contract in Kansas City after seeing his good friend do it.

“Yeah,” Hosmer says. “Absolutely.”

Hosmer goes on to say that, at the moment, he is focused on baseball and not business. He says he only wants to work hard and be as productive as he can be for the Royals, but the first two words of his answer are ringing so I ask again just to make sure he understands what I mean:

Does Sal Perez signing a long-term contract with the Royals make you more open to doing the same?

Hosmer nods. He understands.

“Yeah,” he says. “Absolutely.”

This time, Hosmer goes on to say both sides are only concerned with this year and that the future will take care of itself. But upon hearing Hosmer’s comments, a Royals official said the team is “obviously” interested in talking.

If that 10 year, $90 million figure from ESPN is in the ballpark, could we afford that?...
