Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

CU president leery of Pac-12 adding more teams

By John Henderson
The Denver Post
Posted: 09/06/2011 09:43:25 AM MDT

University of Colorado president Bruce Benson said this morning he is wary of further Pac-12 expansion, particularly if Colorado is placed in an "East" division with former rivals from the Big 12 such as Oklahoma and Texas.
Benson said he would discuss the situation with university chancellor Phil DiStefano later today. Expansion talks have heated up in the aftermath of the Big 12 losing Texas A&M last week, and widespread speculation that Oklahoma and Texas might now bolt, possibly to the Pac 12.
"One of the reasons - and there are a lot of reasons - we got in the Pac 12 is to play regularly on the West Coast," Benson said. "When I hear things like East-West divisions, we're going back to the Big 12 again. I don't know who's possibly going, but I sure don't want to get shorted out of the West Coast."
The Pac-12, which expanded with Colorado and Utah last spring, could possibly become the Pac-16. Oklahoma officials have indicated its priority, if the Big 12 doesn't stay solvent, is joining the Pac-12. Should OU commit to a move it could push others to join, such as Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
Benson and DiStefano always maintained a major reason for CU joining the Pac-12 was that the schools matched Colorado's academic mission. While Oklahoma and Texas are on a par with CU academically, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State may not be.
"I believe that we should have a robust academic atmosphere among all schools in the league," Benson said. "What schools have cinch courses or gut courses? We don't have any and never will. The Pac-12 doesn't. Some Big 12 schools do."
Benson said he hasn't talked to Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott recently and doesn't know what his plans are or what a potential expansion would mean financially to the current members. Scott signed TV contracts that guarantee each school around $20 million a year in TV revenue in future years.
"I'm not sure if there is any more money per school," Benson said. "We'll wait and see. We'll see what Texas does with their (Longhorn) network. Texas likes things Texas's way."
The Longhorn Network will earn the school $15 million a year for 20 years. Scott's refusal to allow Texas to have the network if it was a Pac-12 member is believed to be a factor in why Texas didn't jump last year.
How Scott accommodates Texas, particularly with the Pac-12's four new regional networks, may be a key to whether the Pac-12 becomes the Pac-16.
"Look at the whole Texas funding," Benson said. "Boulder's (athletic) budget was $48 million before the new contract. Texas was $122 million and maybe that's a year old. That's before they got the bigger (TV) contract."
The San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday that most Pac-12 CEOs favor standing pat and not expanding. They like the idea of six-team North and South divisions.
"That's kind of how I look at it," Benson said. "I just don't want to change this dynamic. Every year we're in Northern and Southern California. We want that. Every year we're in Arizona. We want that. We're in Washington. We want that."
Pac-12 expansion could happen soon. If it does, divisional alignment will be a major problem for Colorado if it's in the same division as the Texas and Oklahoma schools.
"I'm not happy at all if we go that way," Benson said. "I'm sure I'll make a lot of noise."

Yeah, after reading that the Big East doesn't sound so bad to me.

Yeah, I'm sure placating the 5th Downers will factor heavily into the Pac-12's decision-making process.

Does CU even have the power to veto anything at this point in time? Do they have to be vested?

Whatever - just give me a healthy conference and let my football program continue to develop. This program has become a legitimately strong program and I desperately want that to continue.
yes, i talked about this yesterday.

I think MU fans should be hoping for the Big East.

Dominate in football and play spoiler in basketball

Waltzing into a Big East bowl bid every year would be pretty nice. It's what KU did in Big 12 for basketball.

I afraid KU will disappear into the mess in the Big East. Basketball will be a bloodfest and football they will just be another team.

As long as Bill Self stays, I think KU MBB will be fine. We might not win the conference every year, but we sure as hell wouldn't disappear either. Big 12 basketball has actually been very good in recent history.

Granted, I don't give a shit about Kansas or basketball (as you well know ), but you guys are a major factor in college basketball year in and year out. Seems to me that KU would be a force in BB no matter what conference they play in. You have the same type of national brand in BB that Nebraska has in football, only yours isn't propped up on shit that happened 20 years ago.

Here is the thing with Texas, blame Oklahoma and Colorado for allowing them to have most of the power in the Big 12. Granted Texas would be an 800 pound gorilla in any conference but when the Big 12 was formed OU sided with them instead of keeping the Big 8 voting block in tact mainly bc they always thought the 5 North schools with Nebraska leading the way dominated everything in the Big 8. Oklahoma acts all innocent but they helped feed the monster thats Texas even more. Of course all of that benefited the Sooners the most since they have pretty much dominated the conference since it was founded.

As it turned out, Texas was terribly terribly wrong and Beebe inadvertently detonated the conference. By the time Texas realized it had all come apart, things were too far gone.

With a real commissioner in place rather than a UT puppet, the Big XII would have immediately moved to assuage Nebraska (and MU's) angst. They'd have been able to keep the XII intact and if they felt the need to expand, they could've used their traditional ties and geography to secure a major player like BYU.

Beebe didn't get fired because he did exactly what Texas told him to do. Unfortunately, dancing to that tune has dissolved the XII. Nicely done, asswipes. Very nicely done.
I blame Beebe a whole helluva lot less than I blame the "enabler" universities that allowed UT to make these moves.

aTm and Nubb, were willing partners in all this tiered revenue sharing shit for 15 years UNTIL they realized that they were a "have not" after all.

And when they realized that UT was more a have, they cried and bounced.

**** them.

Eh, I dunno that OU acts innocent in this.

OU tends to acknowledge the role they played in this mess. They drove the wedge between Nebraska and UT when everything in the world suggested that they should've backed Nebraska during formation and created a more even conference.

They chose their horse and helped feed it, but by the end they recognized their error and could've been instrumental in restructuring the conference in a viable manner.

I think they could've been persuaded (as the statements from their President suggest) but nobody bothered trying until it was too late.

Just another example of the conference and its leadership being reactive.

Look at UConn... they were 9-9 in the conference last year and it certainly didn't matter in the tournament. It would probably help recruiting, playing in front of fans at MSG or in Philadelphia and not Lubbock or Ames.

I don't see any great crime in recognizing a changing landscape and trying to adapt to it.

Better late than never. All those 'enabler' schools were looking to move us towards a sustainable model during the chaos last season.

Had they continued hammering forward under the old model in ignorance until the system collapsed, I'd be with you. But they recognized the mistakes that were made and looked to resolve them.

It was a leadership failure that prevented it.
