Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

OU president says Sooners will decide conference affiliation soon

NORMAN, Okla. | University of Oklahoma president David Boren said Friday that multiple conferences have shown interest in the Sooners and he expects to decide whether to leave the Big 12 within the next three weeks.

Boren said Friday that he has received “interest from other conferences and other universities, so it's really a tribute to the strength of our program at the University of Oklahoma that there is so much interest in us.”

Boren said Oklahoma will carefully evaluate its options and suggested the process could take as little as three days but likely no longer than three weeks.

Texas A&M announced this week that it planned to leave the Big 12 after this season, assuming the Aggies are accepted into the Southeastern Conference. That would reduce the 10-team league to nine members

The NCAA keeps most of the money from the NCAA tournament deals, whereas the BCS is set up to give almost all proceeds back to the school. The NCAA is really supported based on NCAA basketball, but they hoard the money. In the BCS, it's the schools that hoard the money that's why a NCAA Football playoff is not going to happen despite most fans wanting it. That is why I kind of hope the 4 super conferences happen, and they say f*** off to the NCAA. That would help Kansas make much more revenue.
Thanks Wickedson.

If OU goes to any conference, the whole shape of CFB as we know it will change.

As a fan, I don't want anymore ELITE football schools. Good schools are fine, elite ones aren't. You don't want more of a death row that you already have. Same thing w/ the SEC. I can see why if you are the school from a financial standpoint of course it's a no brainer. But if I was an Ohio State or Michigan fan especially.....I would be pissed if Texas and OU came over....I mean just pissed because there are only 2 BCS spots per conference and it makes it even harder to get there. The SEC has a good blueprint right now, a few perennial crappy teams like Kentucky, Vanderbilt, some middle of the line, and then the Elite. How would you like to have Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, OU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State on your schedule.

In the Big 10 we have OSU who has pretty much dominated the conference for the last 10 years. Not trying to be arrogant, but they have been the dominant team. Iowa is always solid, Wisconsin is pretty damn good right now and so is Nebraska. Michigan has been way down for 3 years now and Penn St. has been so so. That is why I'd invite Oklahoma, so we would have another consistently good team, I don't think we have enough in the Big 10. There is the SEC and everybody else in college football right now and I'd like to compete. Just my opinion.

I guess it really depends just how independently OU is acting. Are they truly acting independently, are they acting with OSU in mind, are they acting in secret with Texas?

The next question is what conference. If it is the PAC, you have to suspect Texas is still in play there. If its the SEC or the B!G, then OSU may not be their concern.

If Texas isn't OU's concern, it might give KU some wiggle room to sneak in the conference. If Texas is manipulating, KU might lose out to Tech.

Would still love to see my dream scenario of A&M-MU-KU and UNC to the SEC! Yeah, I know, something about flying monkeys and butts.

I do think it is interesting the KU chancellor came out and made a statement just the other day that KU is not handcuffed to KSU. Perhaps we do have something brewing.

My $.02:

Pac 10 - Texas and KU
SEC - OU, OSU, MU

The ACC and Big 10 can take whatever they want from the Big East.

Notre Dame (hello today's scoreboard) would be wise to join one of them...

ISU, Mizzou, KU, and KSU to the Big 10 to make that league a 16 team league.

OU, OSU, Texas to the Pac 10.

Texas Tech and Baylor fend for themselves.
