-- as a child, what grocery store was the first you remember being in....? Also,

...what food-items do you remember your parents or guardian carting?

I think mine was Milgram's on Seven Hwy. across from Zarda Dairy.

Mom bought Seitz Hot-dogs and Mac-n-cheese loaf.

Also, bagged cereal. We were poor like the dickens.

Can you share your story?

Thank you.

Of course, it may've actually been better. Just stay away from the Pickle Loaf.

Palucca's?!?! holy shit - and who cares about the IGA when you have those two chicken-houses there. Is the Frontenac local baker still there, you know the one, the italian bakery with the phenomenal homebaked bread?

Bakery is still there and doing well. I went to highschool with the new owner. He bought it a few years ago. He kept everything the same as far as processes and baking goes.

Chicken rocks in SEK....you are correct sir.

I believe that even though the Palucca store has closed the butcher and meats continue on. Might not be the case as of today though.

The Simone's family sold out and was purchase oddly enough from another guy I went to school with. I heard that they could never make the sasuages etc as well as the Simones did. They very well could be closed for good.

Damn I'm getting hungry and homesick.

When I was a little kid, we had an A&P four blocks from my house. There was a United Super a couple blocks the other direction, but my mom usually went to the Safeway at 23rd and Sterling in Independence.

The A&P is a liquor store now. United Super is an auto glass repair shop.

There is still a grocery store at 23rd and Sterling now that I shop at quite often, except now its called "Passantino's."

The USAF commissary at Wurtsmith AFB, Oscoda Michigan. Mom would always buy that Banquet boxed fried chicken, TV dinners and frozen Patio Burritos.
My mother can't cook for shit. Whenever my father wants a good, home-cooked meal, he calls me.

I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mall. I spent a LOT of time there before it was even enclosed. Woolworth's was the precursor to K-Mart, both were owned by the same company. The Woolworth's in the Blue Ridge Mall was a classic old school kind of drug/sundry/general merchandise store. You could get all the kind of stuff you get now in Walgreen's, plus they had a lunch counter/soda fountain with ice cream and such, fresh popcorn and lots of candy and toys, so kids LOVED it. Blue Ridge Mall had a cafeteria style restaurant called the Blue Rooster, anchor stores were Jones Store (now Macy's), Penny's and Wards. Also had Hartzfeld's, Russell Stover Candy Store, Newberry's, a bowling alley, Steve's Shoes, Zales Diamonds, Jenkins Music, and lots of other stuff. Of course, it's long since been demolished for a Wally World/Lowe's combo.

In my old neighborhood, we had lots of cool little grocers. Curt's Market (now a butcher shop) in Maywood, United Super in Maywood, United Super in Fairmount, the Milk Jug (convenience store) and lots of little mom and pop drive ins like the Starlight, Candy Stripe, Mugs Up, Dog N Suds, Clem's, and the Golden Point. Those were the good ole days, for sure!
