...what food-items do you remember your parents or guardian carting?

I think mine was Milgram's on Seven Hwy. across from Zarda Dairy.

Mom bought Seitz Hot-dogs and Mac-n-cheese loaf.

Also, bagged cereal. We were poor like the dickens.

Can you share your story?

I can remember having many, many olive loaf sandwiches as a child, which from looking at the pic of the Mac-n-Cheese loaf must have been very similar.

And of course there was a slice of processed cheese food included in the sandwich!

I remember going in the Foodtown and IGA stores in Pittsburg. Can't recall too many of the food items, that mom bought, but I do remember the Contadina tomato paste. She made a lot of her own pastas and egg noodles (which I would eat raw sometimes), but when she did buy pasta, it seems like it was American Beauty. I loved fish sticks as a kid, so she would but those sometimes.

Yeah, Milgrams and Kroger in LS for us. My mom actually left me behind at the Milgrams when she was babysitting a bunch of kids. Halfway home she realized I wasn't in the station wagon and came back to get me.

I remember TG&Y also, even the small store they had by Coast to Coast Hardware. Do you remember Velvet Freeze? We used to ride our bikes over there and get cherry phosphates.

cant remember the name, but there was a small hole about the size of a golfball back near the meat counter. You could look through it and see people down in the basement loading and storing grocery items. My little brother and I would run back and take turns lying on the floor and looking through the hole. Probably drove mom nuts. Funny how you remember little stuff like that 40 years later.

I got squat. My allowance was 25 cents a week up until about fourth grade, and then it supposedly went up to a dollar a week, but the dollars arrived very sporadically and then stopped. I was then a scavenger until I started working in sixth grade.

Its how the other half lived. I got 5 cents per year old I was. so at 8 I was hauling in a cool 40 cents a week, before taxes and the top rate back then was 60% so I was luck to end up with a quarter.
