Google music now live

Google's cloud based Music site is live. Supposedly you can upload up to 20,000 of your own songs to play from anywhere. They are supposed to be adding artist support where you can buy songs like iTunes but they are still in negotiation.

Quote:
Listen anywhere, even offline.
You can get to your personal music collection at home or on the go. Listen from the web or any enabled device with the Music app available from Android Market. Not online? No problem. The songs you've recently played will automatically be available offline. You can also select the specific albums, artists and playlists you want to have available when you're not connected.

Stay in sync, without the hassle.
Spend more time listening to your music and less time managing it. Once your music is online, it's always available. Playlists are automatically kept in sync, and you don't have to worry about cables, file transfers, or running out of storage space.

Your collection, now in one place.
Upload your personal music collection to a single library, even if it's scattered across multiple computers. You can upload music files from any folder or add your iTunes® library and all of your playlists. And when you add new music to your computer, it can be automatically added to your music collection online.

Mix it up.
Create your own custom playlists with just a few clicks. Or use Instant Mix to automatically build new playlists of songs from your collection that go great together. All the playlists you create and all the changes you make to them are automatically available everywhere your music is.

Syncing with a cable just seems bizarre to me. That means I have to be in front of some specific computer running some specific app. That should have died with the Palm PDAs.

I'll be surprised if Google does unlimited storage for free. They don't even do that for Picasa web albums.

The fine print at the bottom says "Music Beta is available free for a limited time," so I'm assuming it won't be completely free forever.

I'm curious how they will handle that. I have a feeling the cap will be higher than 5GB though.

The initial cap is 20,000 SONGS.. they aren't measuring it by GBs right now.

Shit, that is a lot of GBs then if that is the case. Glad I haven't spent time uploading to Amazon cloud yet.

It's free during beta, but I'm sure that'll change down the line.

Google's MO is to leave things free, at least for the early adopters. It's all about finding out more about you and your tastes so they can deliver better ads at just the right time.

They'll likely do what they always do... leave if FREE but add PREMIUM services later.

I wonder what the privacy policy is? I doubt they're going to try to read a users music and use that to tailor ads on other devices. They'd get a lot of flack for that. And absent that, I don't see much room for ad revenue, unless you follow a Pandora model.

I'm sure the service will continue to be free, but only for up to a certain level. I'm saying think more Amazon and less what's there now.

Fine by me if they make it ad supported. I use gmail and the ads don't bother me one bit.

Anyone get an email yet? If so, could you throw an invite my way?

No, but my under standing is that they aren't doing organic invites this time around.

I just read on another board that some people are allowed to invite.
