Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Missouri Ponders Starting It's Own TV Network

After the near-demise of the conference, Big 12 schools are now allowed to have their own TV network. The decision was designed to keep Texas, who has been thinking about starting it's own TV network, in the conference.
Now, David Briggs of the Columbia-Tribune reports Missouri officials "have met to discuss new ways to deliver athletic programming to fans."
If the Tigers did start their own network, it would be the first of its kind. While Texas has talked about doing it -- and most likely will in the near future -- no school has ever started it's own TV network.
However, there's a difference between talking about it, and actually doing it, a Mizzou rep says.

“I would caution from making it sound like that’s absolutely going to happen, but I think we have certain resources and advantages that other schools don’t,” said the Missouri athletic department’s director of media relations, Chad Moller, who has been involved in the school’s talks about future media ventures. “So I’d like to think we can make that happen at some point. Whether it’s five years down the road or longer, I don’t know, of course, but I think it’s a great goal to set out there.”

As the only BCS school in a state with six million, I could see how this would be enticing, and potentially viable.
A consultant and former president of CBS Sports says it would be an "uphill climb" for Mizzou to pull off because the size of the state but one of the more important and costly aspects of a network -- rights to the programming -- are already owned by Mizzou.

“That’s the big cost, and they own the programming,” said John Mansell, a sports media consultant based in Virginia, noting a school-owned network would be a valuable recruiting tool. “I’m not so sure it would be a huge risk to do it.”

Texas is the hottest, richest chick around. She can have anybody she wants. If you land Texas, all of your dreams come true. What you don’t realize is that at the end of the day, you are going to be sitting outside of the dressing room at Nordstrom’s with your thumb up your ass holding her purse while she tries on a bunch of really expensive shit. If you can live with her wearing the pants in the family, then fine. But you’d better learn to like working for her daddy and having her tell you what to wear when you go to the club for dinner on Sunday nights.

OU is a hot chick with big fake tits who spends lots of time in the gym, but she’s a huge whore. The bad news is that OU will cheat on you. The good news is that OU doesn’t care if you cheat on her. It’s all fun and games until someone doesn’t practice safe sex or your neighbors are snickering at you behind your back because your girl got double teamed by a couple of conventioneers at the Anatole the week of the Cottonbowl.

A&M is somewhat good looking and intelligent, but completely bat shit crazy. You can’t tell if A&M is bipolar or just having really bad PMS. But either way, she is going to say and do a whole bunch of shit that is just going to leave you scratching your head or ducking for cover. A&M also has two really huge problems: 1) A&M thinks she is much hotter and much smarter than she really is; and 2) She’s got all sorts of issues with Texas. Both of those feed into her mania. You don’t know what you are getting with this nut job, but it wouldn’t surprise you if she cut off all of her hair and joined the SEC, and then 10 minutes later realized how bad she ****ed up and came back to you in hysterics.

Colorado is the hippy chick who spends all day on Pearl Street dropping empty gas tank lines on the tourists until her father comes to pick her up in his Benz on the way home from his law practice. Colorado is desirable as long as you can duck batteries, put up with poor hygiene and don’t mind the smell of patchouli.

Tech is cute but has poor self esteem. If you pay any attention to her whatsoever, she will love you forever. She’s the type who gives you a smoker on the way to dinner and would be just as content to be your **** buddy. The worse you treat Tech, the more she loves you.

Oklahoma State is a less attractive and sluttier version of OU. She might look pretty good if you’ve had a few drinks, and she’ll let you do anything you want to her in bed. You also might think that she’s rich, but then you find out that all of her credit cards are maxed out and she can’t afford the car she’s driving.

Baylor is overweight, homely and manipulative, and is always sticking her nose into your business where it doesn’t belong. Baylor will try every trick in the world to land the right guy. Baylor will lie, cheat, steal, backstab, blackmail, etc… and then justify it all by going to church on Sunday and asking Jesus for forgiveness. The worst part about Baylor is that she won’t give it up, but will try to cockblock you every chance that she gets.

Nebraska is a cougar who has lost her fastball and is jealous of the other hotter chicks (i.e., Texas). She just spent $2500 on botox and lip injections, and she now looks like the joker when she smiles. It’s sad to see such a former hottie act so desperately and what’s worse, she can’t decide whether she should try to hook up with an aging sugar daddy or go have a series of one-nighters with the drunk twenty-somethings she picks up at Midnight Rodeo.

Kansas is your classic butterface. Great body, but she looks like she fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. At the end of the day, the bad grill outweighs the nice tight ass, because you never want to take her out in public. The last thing you want is to wake up the next morning and have Kansas staring you in the face.

Missouri is cute, but not hot. She’s a nice girl and has a great personality, but needs to drop about 15 lbs. You can see how she could be more attractive, but she’s not ever going to be very sexy, no matter what she does. Missouri is the girl you feel guilty cheating on, but you do it anyway.

Kansas State is overweight and stupid. A few years ago when she lost a ton of weight and looked pretty good, you hooked up with her. Now, you look back and can’t even imagine that it is the same human being. You ignore her Facebook friend request and pretend you don’t recognize or remember her when you run into her in public.

Iowa State is the drunken fat chick at the end of the bar that is just happy to be out of the house. The other girls are nice to Iowa State, mostly because they all look better standing next to her. Iowa State is the type who gets stuck with the huge bar tab at the end of the night and goes home alone unless some really wasted chubby chaser ends up tagging her.

Sources: BYU closer to independence

Brigham Young is moving closer to leaving the Mountain West Conference, becoming a football independent and rejoining the Western Athletic Conference in all other sports by a Sept. 1 deadline to withdraw from the MWC for the 2011 season, multiple sources said Wednesday.

"I'm not sure how it could stop now unless BYU gets nervous," one source with knowledge of the situation said.

The Cougars have been exploring the possibility since in-state rival Utah left the Mountain West for the Pac-10 earlier this summer.

BYU never received an invitation from the Big 12 to replace Colorado, as the Big 12 decided to stay at 10 members after losing the Buffaloes to the Pac-10and Nebraska to the Big Ten.

According to sources, BYU would need approval from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which owns the school, to make the change.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday afternoon that approval will be sought Wednesday or Thursday, and that a news conference had been scheduled for early next week. That timetable may be moved up because of the reports coming out, the Tribune reported.

In response to the reports BYU released a statement saying: "We are aware of the many media reports and questions circulating about BYU's conference alignment. As Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe explained recently, BYU has been reviewing, and will continue to explore, every option to advance its athletic program. At this point, BYU has no further comment."

In an effort to keep BYU in the Mountain West -- a necessity to keep alive its pursuit of an automatic qualifying spot in the BCS -- the conference is considering all avenues, one source told ESPN's Joe Schad Wednesday.

This includes possible concessions to BYU on television rights, much the same way the Big 12 made concessions to Texas, and exploring all of its own television partner options.

BYU's possible move to independent status, sources said Wednesday, is not contingent upon the school getting a seat at the BCS table like football independent Notre Dame. Furthermore, BYU is aware that it might not be afforded the same status as Notre Dame in the BCS.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock told Schad Wednesday that he has spoken with BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. BYU is interested to see if BCS presidents and chancellors would consider provisions to allow them automatic qualifying access.

Hancock said in an e-mail to ESPN.com that the BCS-member schools would "thoughtfully consider any request that comes in. Every school is eligible to be considered by a bowl for at-large selection if it is ranked in the top 14."

The payout for any team selected at-large this year will be $6 million, Hancock said.

Hancock said that "it's too soon to speculate" as to what decision the BCS presidents and chancellors would make.

Notre Dame automatically qualifies for a BCS spot if it finishes in the top eight in the final BCS rankings and has nine wins. But fellow independents Navy and Army do not have similar provisions, as each school would have to finish in the top two to reach automatic qualifying status.

Notre Dame automatically qualified for the BCS in 2006 and was an at-large selection in 2001 and 2007.

Among the factors BCS presidents and chancellors might consider regarding BYU are the tradition and value of Notre Dame to the BCS relative to any other independent that might leave its conference. Specific rules have not been written in BCS materials regarding a process by which a school that claims independence could earn special concessions.

As an independent, BYU would have a chance to make its own national schedule and qualify for a BCS bowl. If that occurred, the school would keep its share of bowl money, rather than split bowl revenue with the rest of its conference. That's an enticing proposition for the school.

The WAC, according to sources, has assured BYU it will have a soft landing for all of its other sports, similar to the arrangement Notre Dame enjoys with the Big East, where it competes in all sports except football.

BYU would play four to six WAC programs in football every season, according to sources. The Cougars already play in-state rival and WAC member Utah State every season.

BYU's football team went undefeated (13-0) and was ranked No. 1 by The Associated Press in 1984 as a member of the WAC.

Landing BYU for men's basketball would be a major coup for the WAC, considering the Cougars have been to the NCAA tournament 25 times. BYU won 12 WAC titles during its run in the conference and plays in the 22,700-seat Marriott Center.

While BYU considers leaving the Mountain West, WAC members Fresno State and Nevada were approached by a Mountain West representative Tuesday about an invitation to the league, according to a source.

A source told Schad that Houston and UTEP also have been studied as possible additions to the MWC.

However, if a WAC school decides to go to the MWC, it will come at the expense of a costly buyout.

Once Boise State left, the remaining WAC members -- Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Hawaii, Idahos, Nevada and Utah State -- signed a $5 million buyout agreement that would be assessed to any member that left the conference within the next five years. The schools took that move to keep other members from following the Broncos to the Mountain West.

BYU, which would like to become the Notre Dame of the West, is seeking a separate television agreement for its football program. Notre Dame currently has a football deal with NBC.

According to independent multiple sources, BYU is in discussion with ESPN for its football rights. ESPN already has an agreement with the WAC to televise football and basketball.

BYU has its own national television network, BYU-TV, which is available on major satellite networks. BYU-TV is going to HD, and with the wide reach of the Mormon church, the Cougars could build national appeal, as Catholic-based Notre Dame has.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson said earlier this summer that the league "would give consideration to" taking back BYU in all other sports, were the Cougars to go independent for football. Benson declined to comment on this story.

BYU previously has considered going independent. But at that time, the option of being a football independent came with being independent in all other sports, making scheduling much more difficult. In this case, BYU's other sports would be protected by membership in the WAC.
