Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Dude, there are 2.8 million people in the entire state. There are more people in 8 square miles of where I live. That said, there is no unity among Kansas fans. Some root for KSU football, some root for KU football, some root for Oklahoma and some root for Nebraska.

Out of those 2.8 million, there are probably less than 400,000 that watch college football on a weekly basis, let alone for one school.

I thought you meant basketball at first. But still, I highly doubt anywhere you go in Kansas is less than 65% Kansas fans. Especially in basketball. Alot of Kansans don't really care about the football team, but follow the basketball team religiously. Which is unfortunate, and why nobody wanted us in their conference.

Dude, this WHOLE THING was about football and football revenues.

Basketball revenues are paltry in comparison, which is why if the Big 12 had completely collapsed, KU, KSU, & ISU were in serious danger of landing with a mid-major conference.

Well, KU is 3rd in Big 12 revenue disbursement in the conference. Yet they are 11th in the conference in football revenue. That is pretty impressive if you ask me that basketball makes up for that shortfall. Especially w/ the NCAA tournament screwing Kansas over.

Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, former University of Arkansas football player and big-time power broker in the world of professional and now college athletics, is the driving force behind a potential move that would make the Big 12 the most compelling conference in the history of college football.

Jones, according to a source familiar with his thinking, wants his alma mater to play in a league with former Southwest Conference rivals Texas and Texas A&M. A visionary, Jones sees the Big 12 expanding with Arkansas and Notre Dame. Such a conference alignment turns on TV sets across America and sends cash gushing out of Big 12 faucets everywhere.

Since moving to the SEC, Arkansas football, once a loud national brand, has faded. Lack of SEC television exposure in Texas, at least until the past couple of years, has eroded what used to be the Razorbacks’ primary recruiting base. The decline of the status of Arkansas’ football program runs deeper than the talent that takes the field every Saturday. The Hogs haven’t developed rivalries as intense as they had in the SWC with their SEC brethren since the football team began participating in the league in 1992.

Not that SEC rivalries don’t exist for Arkansas, but they don’t match those the Hogs had with Texas and A&M. The Golden Boot, a 24-karat gold trophy in the shape of Arkansas and Louisiana, is awarded to the winner of the LSU game, but only since 1996. Arkansas first played Ole Miss in 1908 and the teams played seven overtimes in a 2001 meeting. Nice, but not quite Texas.

When Jones throws money and influence behind an idea, it tends to work for all parties, especially himself. He purchased the Cowboys for $150 million in 1989. Forbes.com estimates the franchise’s value at $1.65 billion and puts Jones’ net worth at $1.2 billion. Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, would make a nice permanent home for the Big 12 football championship game, just as the Sprint Center would for the Big 12 basketball tourney.

It’s more difficult to read Notre Dame’s feelings because the school’s officials don’t get involved in doing business publicly. For all the hits Notre Dame takes as a so-called “hype machine,” the school deserves credit for conducting itself with class.

Conspiracy theorists wonder whether the Big Ten, long lusting after Notre Dame, will try to lure the Fighting Irish by recruiting a few Big East schools, blowing up that conference and leaving ND with nowhere else to turn. Ole Notre Dame would not reinforce such evil tactics and could find a more profitable home by joining hands with Texas and the other 10 institutions, including Arkansas, to form a Big 12 TV network that would blow away the hugely successful Big Ten Network.

Asked Tuesday about expansion plans, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said, “We’re not looking to expand at all and certainly we wouldn’t look to expand with any institutions that are in our geographic, five-state area.”

Those five states are Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Notre Dame is in Indiana. Arkansas is in Arkansas. Oh Danny Boy, make it happen. Bring the Irish and Hogs to the Big 12.

Yeah, that would be pretty awesome. But those two teams aren't going anywhere. You would think both of those schools could still make alot of money. Big 12 could give ND a deal like Texas, but I really don't think Arkansas could make anymore money than they make in the SEC unless Notre Dame were to confirm they are coming to the Big 12. Jerry Jones was probably just drunk and talking to some college kid w/ a cell phone again.

Ah okay. That makes sense. I was reading it wrong. That is actually amazing that KU is #3 in total revenue payout w/ such a sh*tty revenue making football team. KU must be #1 by a huge sum in basketball revenue, and that is all the while getting fucked by the NCAA and that stupid NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament screws the traditional power houses in revenue. Too bad there aren't BCS games in NCAA basketball.

I think the more logical explanation is that year that that table is displaying is the single year that KU went to a BCS bowl and won the NC, thus I'd venture to guess that they are not 3rd in revenue every year.
