Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

So I guess the Big XII Championship doesn't mean anything in 2003?

Or the Big Six championship in 1934?

Fun fact, K-State is 4-2 against Texas (in football) since the Big XII was formed in 1996.

Nebraska? 1-8.

I can see why Nebraska wanted out. They were tired of getting their asses kicked by Texas.

I don't really understand how on earth Oklahoma is #1 and Texas is #2 but okay. I don't know one other school that sells out every single game, has as many games on national TV, gets to charge as much as they do for tickets, and Allen Fieldhouse is the second to largest capacity in the Big 12. Texas, does not usually sell out their stadium which is like 300 larger. What am I missing here?

The state of Kansas has 2.8 million people in the entire state.

The state is not unified for one team. Eastern Kansas is likely to root for Colorado, Southern Kansas for Oklahoma and some of Northern Kansas for Nebraska.

2.8 million people spread very thin doesn't provide the television revenue stream (i.e., Advertising dollars) that a school like Oklahoma, Nebraska & Texas can attain, mostly due to being traditional football powers for the better part of six decades.

In that case, Kansas just can't compete.

For the record, I'm kinda bummed that Texas decided to become the "Overlords" of the Big 12. I think Kansas would have been far better off in the long run joining the Pac-10.

Who knows? Texas may bail in the next five years, with one giant do-over ahead.

I think that was total disbursements, not just basketball. In other words, after all revenue was counted and weighted, KU was third despite the disparity of football versus basketball revenues.

Ah okay. That makes sense. I was reading it wrong. That is actually amazing that KU is #3 in total revenue payout w/ such a sh*tty revenue making football team. KU must be #1 by a huge sum in basketball revenue, and that is all the while getting fucked by the NCAA and that stupid NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament screws the traditional power houses in revenue. Too bad there aren't BCS games in NCAA basketball.

Yea they really got their asses kicked considering every game was withint a touchdown. If you want to see ass kicking look up the Nebraska/ Kstate series.
