Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment
A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.
Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is. He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports. "We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about." The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on. The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement. http://www.wndu.com/sports/headlines/92447574.html Last edited by Mr. Laz; 06-10-2010 at 02:57 PM.. |

Yeah, but that's through association via the respective state's Board of Regents, not necessaily because they are "much" better progams. Association has benefits if your associates are powerful.

The Big 12 South (or whatever it's called now) totally used the North as its Fleshlight.

What are some other programs in other conferences that are comparable to MU, KU, and KSU? How will we stack up with them with the new revenue?
All have been very competitive with other similar teams with even the previous TV deal. Will doubling our money not make things even better? I don't concern myself with how much more Texas has. I know my school will never be up there with them. What I want to do is be up there with other middle tier schools. I feel this new conference accomlishes that. Doubled our income and probably will recruit Texas kids a bit better. |

Arkansas gets about $17 million/season from it's deal. Facially, 2+ million more/season isn't immaterial, but I don't suppose it's worth going crazy over either. But that's not really the problem. The problem is that this deal will continue to create instability within the conference. The SEC deal was a unified contract that had everyone in the conference happy and ready to move forward. This deal is just going to continue to foster animosity. Absolutely nothing was solved here, in fact the leash got even shorter.

UPDATE, 10:15 a.m.: Speaking to reporters in Austin, Texas, Texas President Bill Powers seemed to debunk reports that the Big 12 revenue-sharing policy will be changed to a tiered system that was reported here and elsewhere. "We oppose that kind of deal," Powers said, referring to a special bonuses for certain schools. "We will be distributing money like we have done previously."
Powers said he is not aware of any "firm deal" with TV networks and that Texas' return to the Big 12 was based on economic estimates of the value of the Big 12. http://www.columbiatribune.com/weblo...-the-old-boss/ |

How much is the TV deal worth per year overall? I guess no one really knows that yet. If the tiered system were true, then it would be somewhere around $170-$180 million per year:
Tier 1: $25mm/year x 3 = $75mm Tier 2: $17mm/year x 2 = $34mm Tier 3: $14mm/year x 5 = $70mm I that is the approximate value, and we AREN'T going to use the tiered system, then the schools stand to see a lot more $$. What are the distribution percentages from last year? If we applied those percentages to $170 million, what would each school get? |

So, word is CU will be paying a 6-8 million dollar penalty for leaving the Big 12.
One has to wonder how they're going to pay that when they couldn't afford Hawkins' $3mm buyout. |
