Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Jeez, so straight forward.... Better: Just spoke with Curator Judith Haggard, and while she has nothing new to report, all signs still point to maybe possibly announcing a move to the Big 10 tomorrow.

which is why I'm sleptical it will happen. Texas has too sweet a deal here.

Say goodbye to Nebreaska and Meth-U, invite 2 (TCU, Memphis, Boise St, Utah, BYU, etc), move OU and OSU to the north (giving the conference the OU/TX matchup in the championship game), and start planning for a long-term expansion into a 16-team conference.

They owned the Big XII because they owned the majority the TV markets and had better resources than rest of the schools, I don't see them having those advantages over the Pac 10, or more specifically the California schools. Although USC is going to be hurting for a few years, but they won't stay down.

But you're right about their arrogance, and that's why I still don't believe it's going to happen. I honestly think they'd rather try to make a go with the Big XII minus CU, NU, and MU so they can continue to be the big fish.

Source: Colorado moving to Pac-10

Colorado is poised to announce as early as Thursday that the school is leaving the Big 12 to join the Pac-10.

Colorado's conference move was first reported by The Sporting News.

Colorado's impending move might spell the end for the Big 12 conference. Nebraska is also poised to announce its move from the conference to the Big Ten.

A Big 12 football coach, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach on Wednesday night that if Nebraska left the Big 12 the conference would dissolve, according to his athletics director and university president. The coach said Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado would join the Pac-10, leaving Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Iowa State behind.

"Nebraska is the key," the coach said.

The coach said the Pac-10 favored Colorado over Baylor because of the Buffaloes' presence in the Denver TV market.

Another Big 12 coach said Wednesday night that an anticipated Nebraska announcement of moving toward the Big Ten Thursday would indeed trigger the death of the Big 12 and a mass migration west.

"If Nebraska leaves," the coach said, "everyone has to look."

The new conference would be split into divisions with Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado forming an Eastern Division with Arizona and Arizona State opposite the former Pac-8 (USC, UCLA, Stanford, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State) in the Western Division.

The coach said it's possible the Pac-16 would push for two automatic bids to the BCS, one for each division champion. That potential bonanza could open the possibility of the two division champs from one league playing for the national title, and it would eliminate the need for a conference championship game.

"The Pac-10 doesn't believe in a championship game," the coach said. "And coaches in the Big 12 don't like it anyway."
As stated before:

Translation: We want to get 2 teams from our conference in a Championship game so we don't have to play a team from the SEC and can, therefore, get a guaranteed NC.

Having a 16 team conference with 2 8-team divisions with an auto-bid from each division and NO conference championship game? BS. I don't see the other conferences ever agreeing to that garbage.

Nobody even comes close to Texas in P10 in terms of money. Texas is going to be the dominant school no matter where they go. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

All that the Big 12 has ever hung on is Texas. If Texas stays, the Big 12 isn't goin' anywhere.

If you make a trade for Nebraska+Colorado for say Cincinnati and Utah. Then that isn't too bad. Obviously that is a dream scenario but I'm just praying Texas wants to stay.

So when Deaton comes out and says this is the first he's heard of Colorado to the Pac-10, did anyone else have a full-body shiver?

I will attribute mine to the realization that perhaps Deaton and Alden aren't suprisingly brilliant poker players, but in fact predictably incompetent, clueless boobs...as they have been for years now.

Trying to keep brave face.

Failing.

I'm going to be surprised to see Texas go anywhere.

Regarding Deaton, please don't make me relive the images I have from the situation around the Mike Anderson hire.

Well if that's the case, and the Pac 10 isn't smart enough to learn from the Big 8's mistake, then I'm not going to feel sorry for them at all.
