Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Lose from what? Missouri leaving? Nebraska is gone. The conference is finished, regardless of what Missouri does.

Anything that doesn't involve adding Texas is a downgrade.

Disagree. Adding Texas A&M opens up a HUGE Texas market and possible recruiting ground.

Adding Miami/FSU makes more sense than adding Texas.

SEC is, and will continue to be, the premier college football conference.

You stating anything otherwise only further solidifies my statement.

Done deal: Buffs to announce Pac-10 membership Friday

Quote:
It's a done deal.
The University of Colorado will announce at an 11 a.m. Friday press conference that the school will leave the Big 12 and join the Pac-10.
Multiple sources confirmed the deal to the Camera early Thursday, and league officials are scheduled to be in Boulder on Friday for the announcement.
The new league will have at least 12 teams, and likely 16. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are also still on the Pac-10's docket, and most observers believe those schools are also ready to make the move to West Coast-based conference. The expanded conference would likely debut in time for the 2012 football season.
Colorado officials have spent the week working behind the scenes to make sure the school was part of the Pac-10's expansion plans. The deal was finalized Wednesday after CU's board of regents gave athletic director Mike Bohn the go-ahead to secure an invitation at a meeting Tuesday night in Denver.
Speculation has mounted for the last week that Colorado would be part of the Pac-10's massive expansion. The Camera reported last week that CU would be part of a six-team deal that would also include Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
That speculation hit a snag after Baylor officials became incensed when the Bears were not included in the group, and mounted a late campaign in the Lone Star State to replace Colorado.
Those efforts failed. While Baylor took its case to the public, CU officials quietly worked behind the scenes to procure an invitation from the Pac-10 and were successful.
What is also likely is that the Big 12 is a dead conference walking. Wednesday, it was reported that Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds told UT staffers that the conference couldn't be saved. Those reports surfaced after reports said that Nebraska was ready to join the Big Ten.
Colorado, however, did not want to hinge its decision based on that of any other school in the Big 12, including Texas and Nebraska. CU athletic department officials have been working on proving the school's worth to the Pac-10 for months, and they utilized a wide variety of CU resources - including prominent faculty members and administrators - to make their case.
Sources said Thursday morning that Nebraska has also scheduled a press conference on Friday to announce that it will become a part of the Big Ten. Without Colorado and Nebraska, the odds of the Big 12 surviving are extremely slim.
The Big 12 will have to play two more seasons with its current teams - and that could be two very stormy years.
A date to remember in the near future? Try Oct. 16, when Baylor visits Colorado and Texas plays at Nebraska.

From someone as much in the know as there is:

I've talked to about 15 people today who I consider to be very close to the AD, or have some business reason or another to be in Mizzou Arena, or are in the media, or are major boosters, or are in other booster groups where they have tremendous access to Mizzou Athletics. This is outside of even my own personal contacts.

Thus far I've heard NOTHING that changes my opinion that Mizzou is heading to the Big 10. In fact, that's their opinion too. Not one person who I consider credible has presented any sense at all of disheartening news within Mizzou Athletics. Keitzmann today stated that MU athletics department staff were "walking around in a shocked daze," after the Big 10, "dropped a bomb on Columbia today." Wrong. It was business as usual, with no outward appearance in the least of stress or concern. None. It's fairly easy to read Mike Alden when he's upset. No indication of that whatsoever, and this is coming from folks who have been around him for YEARS.

I will say this, that it takes some serious digging to find out anything. You have to know who you've trusted in the past and who's never led you astray in the past. And you go with them when you can't get it directly from the top. I have NEVER seen Mizzou this quiet - not just today, but from day one. It's telling, which is why on top of what I've been hearing for months now, I also believe Mizzou has felt very positively about this since day one. I'm positive that wasn't based on a pipe dream.

Soooo... unless there is a Mizzou-to-the-Big-10 fabrication network larger than the nationwide effort to frame O.J. (RIP Johnny Cochran), then everyone who I truly believe is in an absolute position to know is saying the same things, that we're going to be a part of the Big 10.

Another comment... has anyone noticed how nearly EVERYTHING negative regarding Mizzou to the Big 10 is originating from a source called "orangebloods.com?" Even when I see things like, "Oh shit, we're effed, now ESPN is report Mizzou is screwed," when I go take a look at the article it will say, "According to website orangebloods.com, Mizzou is screwed."
This is nothing more than one posters message on PowerMizzou. It is not from anyone at UM (I assume you are using UM as University of Michigan).
