Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

The Lawrence Journal-World claims they have sources that also confirm that Nebraska is gone.

5:12 p.m. Update

The Lawrence Journal-World has confirmed reports that Nebraska University is headed to the Big Ten.

"It's a done deal," a source said Wednesday.

Reports of Nebraska's most recent intentions first surfaced early Wednesday morning and continued to grow throughout the day. Multiple reports have indicated that NU will make a formal announcement Friday.

The loss of the Cornhuskers leaves the future of the Big 12 up in the air but at least one person from Kansas University said Wednesday that he didn't believe Nebraska bolting spelled the end for the Big 12.

"Our league's not dead (if we lose Nebraska)," KU men's basketball coach Bill Self said. "It would be nice if we could keep Nebraska but our league will fight hard. Of course we probably need to do some things and be very aggressive in doing them but it's not dead."

the sec would jump on clemson and GT most likely if the big 10 was sniffing around...they'd prefer to do nothing, but may not have a choice

i live in sec country, heard a caller today say the sec should take GT and KU because the conference needs better basketball....the hosts agreed....

now, i know, the the sec isn't going after ku...but it will get crazy if the pac 16 is true...

It would be nice, but I'm not holding out hope, at all. For those who do want to be glass-one-percent-full, I did read that Florida will resist adding Miami or FSU because they use SEC membership as an in-state recruiting advantage, and the SEC isn't sure what they would do for the conference if they already have Florida's flagship school.

That said, there's probably tons of other options they could go to before Kansas.

I pretty much am, there's too much smoke between the PAC-10 expansion authorization, the ultimatum, and no one really denying it.

In the end, Nebraska will be known as the school which finally killed one of the most successful (on the field) conferences in the country.

You better start praying. There's a source in an ESPN story saying that Mizzou is getting a cold shoulder right now.

I'm not either, if it's just NU leaving.

I'm at 80 posts a page and this thing jumped 4 pages in the time I was at physical therapy.

So, I'm catching up - maybe someone can answer this for me...

If only NU is leaving, why the **** would Texas want to abandon their sweetheart deal and go to the Pac10?

I can't imagine it would be more lucrative there than it would be to just pick up a 12th team to replace NU and just continue to rape the other 11 schools financially, as they are doing now.
