A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

KU would get better recruits and more media exposure if they go East, there are no negatives with that move as far as Jayhawk basketball is concerned. It's a pipe dream though.

Don't forget that DePaul(Chicago) is in the Big East as well, so technically they would only be skipping one state (Missouri)

I did. But I might as well get another rumor started....

My sources say the Big East will consume the Big 10, the SEC will consume the ACC, the Pac 10 will consume the Big 12 making one gigantic cluster **** of a mess.

If the Big 12 dissolves then the Big 10 will have swiped schools from the Big East as well as the Big 12. The Big East will need to replace schools and it is a basketball heavy conference.

If the Big 12 doesn't dissolve then the Big East will have only lost 1 school because Notre Dame will have taken the place MU/Neb and KU won't need to move.

so right now it looks like KU will stay in the Big 12 or move to the Big East.

unless of course the big east doesn't want KSU

With the exception of travel distance, it does make the most sense of any of ku's possible choices.

ok, so...if the B10 expands by one, and only one, taking NEB, where does that leave everyone that complains that expansion is gross because it is all about money and eyeballs?

Not a whole lot of difference with this than having NU and MU going to Penn State or visa versa.

The fact that Osborne has made this a "done deal" back when this thread was started. He's still butthurt from not being allowed partial qualifiers when the Big XII was formed.

Not in the media markets they bring. I think he is saying that its stupid to think its only about viewers in your area its also about ratings.

Actually from what Ive read, the Big East would take Iowa State and Kansas, that would leave KSU with the MWC

For what it's worth, KK is reporting that MU has been rebuffed by the Big 10 and they're scrambling in Columbia about what to do.

His scenario (from his sources) is that this has been a Big 10/Pac 10 football power power-grab all along. Nebraska to the Big Ten and the Pac 10 gets the Texas/Oklahoma teams. ND still seems to be in the mix and if they join the Big 10 Nebraska may be out.

Take if for what it's worth.

So, question:

If MU and Neb leave the Big 12, then Texas carries through with its threats and dissolves its backyard league (big 12) and joins the Pac-10... does that mean Neb and MU don't have to pay to buyout their contracts since there is no Big 12 to pay?
