Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

IA Gov. (D) Chet Culver said something about putting pressure on the board of Regents and U of Iowa to get the Big 10 to let ISU tag along too. Personally i think i would have a better chance winning the lotto.

Texas should be happy with only having to contend with OU. The money loss from other schools won't be made up from the likes of TCU and if they add another Boise St.

4) curtis martin

7) marshall faulk
8) tony dorsett
9) earl campbell
10) oj simpson

that's just off the top of my head--there are more. when you have an injury plagued career, it's impossible to call a guy GOAT.

If college sports were fair, there would be a Super Conference for programs like Texas, Florida, USC, etc. and the one who sucks the peniss would just play each other and leave the rest of us alone. God, I'd love that. Seriously, what business does a school with a $150 million sports budget have playing in the same conference with a school that has a $40 million sports budget? Yeah, that's fair.

5 bowl games since 2000 but those are generally 7 8 win seasons and last year 6.

It hurts recruiting the state of TX mostly that is one of the huge downfalls. Although ISU doesn't pull only 3 stars or less from down there and FLA that is what makes up most of the quality in their recruiting classes.

All depends on what conference they actually join and who else does too.

ISU still fills out 40 k for FB and travels very well. That's all the bowl game last year and them getting the bid over MU was all about money.

went to oklahoma state. there's another loss. jesus, does it hurt being so vapid? there's no poison to pick. hell, I'm 'from' texas, but raised elsewhere--the fact that my mom and dad got it on in texas and squeezed me from the vag doesn't give me any ties to the state, so it's rather difficult to claim barry sanders.

longevity for curtis martin (he had a pretty damned good career as well), and earl campbell had better longevity and better production than sayers.

LINCOLN — An executive at a Big 12 school relayed to The World-Herald on Tuesday that he expects Nebraska to become a member of the Big Ten as early as Friday.

NU Chancellor Harvey Perlman has declined all interviews about conference realignment and expansion. He is expected to address the topic with the Board of Regents at its Friday meeting in Lincoln.

Direct confirmation from Nebraska of a conference change for the Huskers wasn't immediately available. Sources at two other Big 12 schools told The World-Herald that their athletic directors have instructed them to be ready by week's end for a briefing on probable Big 12 changes.

Nebraska A.D. Tom Osborne offered implicit confirmation Tuesday night that the timetable on national conference realignment has been accelerated.

On his monthly appearance on the Husker Sports Network, Osborne said:

“I think before too long — I don't know exactly what that time frame is — we'll be able to put this to bed," then he jokingly added, “because I'm getting tired of it."

The Big Ten first revealed on Dec. 15 that it was considering expansion, and that it would take 12 to 18 months to act.

Now, six months after that initial announcement, multiple sources have indicated that the Big Ten is prepared to add one to five schools (including Nebraska), and that the Pacific 10 is courting all six schools from the Big 12 South Division.

“There's a lot of information we really don't have right now," Osborne said. “Hopefully we'll get these put together in the next few days.

“Anything I would say regarding Nebraska's position or other schools in the Big 12 would be pure speculation. And I don't think that's very helpful."

Another issue Osborne addressed is recent speculation that he has a personal grudge against Texas or that he is basing decisions on some hatred of the Longhorns.

“We certainly don't have anything against anybody in the Big 12," Osborne said. “This decision is not going to be based on animosity or petty jealousy. You're talking about something that could maintain for the next 75 to 100 years.

“This is a big deal in terms of the University of Nebraska. It's a big deal for other institutions. You don't ever make a decision based on personal likes and dislikes."

Osborne said he gets along “very well" with Texas A.D. DeLoss Dodds and is a “great admirer" of UT football coach Mack Brown.

“This is not a case of reacting to any one school," Osborne said, “particularly Texas."

Earlier Tuesday, The World-Herald requested an interview with Dodds. His spokesman, from Austin, Texas, said Dodds was unavailable because of a personal commitment.

Dude, nobody is saying KU is going to the Mountain West. I don't understand why people are just ASSUMING KU is going to the Mountain West. It doesn't make any sense. Just because Missouri and Nebraska like to shout about where they want to go and whore themselves out, doesn't necessarily mean KU is shit out of luck. Kansas athletic department revenue is more than almost any other team in the Pac 10, and a Top 4 in the Big 12. I think it's comically when people act like KU isn't relevant just because they hate them so much.
