Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Kansas brings in a tremendous amount of money for ITSELF. The worry is does it make a TV cable subscriber deal better to sell?

KU has a huge national following but that doesn't neccessarily translate to cable subscriptions at home, where there just aren't that many people.

I agree, the athletic achievement that KU has is going to be hard to ignore if any of this movement ever happens.

And needed KSU to come along to give it it's best ratings.

Hey, if you think the Josh Selby's of the world are really going to keep flocking to the MWC instead of going to the new 'SuperPac', more power to you.

I truly believe you are greatly underestimating the impact of becoming a mid-major. Maybe the SEC or even the ACC will toss you a life preserver, but if KU ends up in the Mountain West, say goodbye to being a national power (if ever you truly were. 2 championships in 50 years is hardly what I'd consider a powerhouse, but that's a separate debate...)

Notre Dame is your white knight. You'd better hope those fellas commit and stop this expansion talk soon...

KU's chancellor called the chancellors of Nebraska and Missouri just to tell them about Kansas's superiority and to remind them that basketball season was on the way.

"How many Final Fours do you have?" was the ending question.

I've already stated multiple times that I believe a ND commitment will end all of this.

You've also stated that basketball makes more money than football and that there's no way MU gets a Big 10 invite.

You're almost as good at this as CoMoChief.

I believed she called to encourage them not to throw away 100 years of tradition and rivalry.

Then again for MU you might as well throw away the last 100 years.

Notre Dame will not move just to be No. 12 and make the Big Ten a superconference.

If Notre Dame moves to the Big Ten, it will be as the fifth of five teams. They aren't going there unless the superconference movement is happening.

Too much income lost for them to merely be No. 12. The Irish only do it IF they have no other choice.

Has there been a non-KU fan seriously argue that ND is NOT better off as an independent?

You must have missed this article about profits for teams (basketball vs football). Here it is again.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/15/comm...sbiz/index.htm

That left Villanova with only a 38 percent profit margin, a bit below the combined 45 percent profit margin for the 64 tournament teams that report results (Air Force is exempt from reporting).

Together those schools had a combined $330.8 million in revenue during the 2004-05 school year, and $148.3 million in profits, even when including results from the 14 money-losing basketball programs involved in March Madness.

Based on those numbers, basketball is more of a sure money maker for schools than college football -- at least for the schools in the so-called six major conferences.

Really, I don't make stuff up. I swear...

They know they'll be ****ed over, they are looking out for themselves pleading to Nebraska mainly and MU not to leave.

Why wouldn't they? They kept going to Memphis while Calipari was there.
