A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

yea ... but this isn't just taking a risk for yourself. This is putting an entire university at risk and millions of dollars. Not a risk anyone should take lightly.

what happens if something goes wrong and you have to start firing teachers because the income of the school takes a sudden drop?

you don't play monopoly with real jobs of real people with real families.

I don't think the MWC deserves one.

Currently, the SEC, Big XII, ACC, Big 10 and Pac-10 deserve auto-bids, IMO.

If the Big XII were to dissolve with Texas, OU, etc. going to the Pac-10 and Mizzou, Nebraska going to the Big 10 then I'd rather just the 4 remaining conferences from the above list get auto-bids.

Yes they are the best teams right now.

Why not allow another conference (if it were to come together in the way we're talking) to complete with the others? The track record is there.

Seems like a simple call to me.

Shit, a MWC with Boise, KU, and KSU is probably better than the Big East. The recent track record in big games is better.

This is precisely what so many men in collegiate athletics have worked so hard to prevent for so many years.

A country with 4 super conferences would cease to be college football. It may not be pro but its definitely morphed to something else.
