Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Notre Dame has averaged seven wins a season over the last 15 years. Scary.

I don't think KU would fair well AT ALL in football in the Big 10. The chance for success lies here in the Big 12 or MWC.

I think it's a pretty natural reaction in this case... it's not like Mizzou would get an invite based on anything they control. They would get an invite because of the potential value of St. Louis and maybe Kansas City to the Big Ten Network. I think they would do fine in football and pretty well in basketball, and it would be good for the school as well. So yeah, being the one left out of that talk sucks. As far as the sports are concerned, I wouldn't want to watch the Big 10, but I sure as hell don't want KU winding up in the MVC, and the MWC would suck for basketball.

Eh, until something actually happens, it's all pointless speculation... I'm glad it's finally picking up steam though.

Meh, B10 is weaker at the top than the B12. OSU isn't as good as Texas or OU and the rest of the teams are pretty much on par with what we face in B12 every year.

It's kind of a shame to see B12 disintegrate right as we were becoming pretty much one of the two best conferences in the country if you take all the 3 major sports into account. SEC being the the other one, of course. I don't blame MU and NU for leaving one bit. Not to go to the B10 would be sheer ****ing lunacy.

Anyway, our BB seasons are going to get pretty boring once we start dominating the MWC should we join them. They better start scheduling some big time non-con games.

This move by the Pac 10 to go to 16 helps the MU/Nebraska to the Big 10 thing, I think. It pretty much rules out the idea of the Big 10 only adding ND, because if there are going to be four sixteen team "super conferences"... The Big 10 will damn sure want to be one of them.

Things are moving along quickly now, and nobody wants to be left in the lurch. Hence the Big 10 "fast tracking".

So in a way, Texas' little ultimatum makes things easier, I guess.

Interesting that you would denigrate Illinois. They played in a BCS bowl the same year as KU.
