Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

That local tradition began getting nailed as soon as Texas and co. joined our conference (and we promptly dropped all records and etc from our previous conference.

I'd be OK with ku getting a ride to the Big Ten. Too bad kSU is chained around your neck.

As it is, I'm sure you all will do OK in the MWC...

The Big XII is a very new conference, and I could give a rat **** about leaving. What I care greatly about is the academic benefit of moving to the Big 10. This trumps everything.

Ignore him.

He wouldn't give a flying **** about '100 years of tradition' if KU wasn't about to get left out in the cold.

I've actually stated in another thread that I'd be fine with KU joining the MWC.

Boise St, TCU, Utah, BYU are all good to great football programs. You'd think that if Boise and KU/KSU join they will surely be elevated to BCS status...

It will just be weird to not play Neb, MU, and OK year in and year out. And for what? Money that none of the fans will ever see? I don't get it.

I still find it hard to believe that Tex would join the Pac-10 btw.

LOL! That is a good point. How come know one is talking about GayU in all of this. Of course I'd could give two shits about them...

I agree with your thoughts on the "Big 12". I'm referring more to the Big 8. I've grown up having pride in the area schools and MU/Neb attempting to leave feels more like defeat for them than an achievement.

Heh heh. I love the built in KSU excuse. That is hilarious.

What's with you dude? Why the venom?

I have no interest in KU going to the Big 10 and butting heads every week with big time established football programs.

Missouri is going to get their ass kicked in football for the next 20 years. Sorry to break that too you.

You thought the Navy loss was bad?

Well, then I can promise you that we'll be the happiest "losers" in the country. Mizzou fans and alumni should loath the greatly increased academic affiliation and additional revenue streams going into the university to further improve overall quality.

Yes. Because Mizzou has really been getting its ass handed to it by Big 10 teams these past few years.
