A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Exactly. They've run things like MLB, and Texas is the Yankees. Not to mention completely missing the boat on the TV deal, when they had the chance.

And FWIW, they stick it to KU just as hard as any other school.

This shit sucks. I sure hope they can do something to keep the Big XII together, but it's not looking good. You can call it a self inflicted wound because they ****ed around as other conferences came in and poached their schools. That and the money not being equally distributed is causing this to happen. ****ing reeruns. Just sat back and watched it happen.

I won't trust that it's for real until it's official... but it sure seems likely.

And "fair" is exactly right. The Big 12 currently is set up to help the rich get richer.

There will be no Big XII left once Missouri leaves. There are 3 major markets in the Big XII outside of Texas (Kansas City, St. Louis, and Denver). If Missouri leaves, especially if Nebraska leaves, Colorado is long gone to the Pac 10. There is no way in hell that the Longhorns are going to want to subsidize a bunch of other schools without major markets.

Texas will go independent and sign a larger TV contract than Notre Dame.

Oklahoma and possibly Oklahoma State might be forced to join the Pac 10 or possibly form a new conference with schools like BYU, Utah, TCU, A&M, Texas Tech, Nevada, Baylor, and UNLV.

I just don't think that the Big XII would be viable by trying to replace Mizzou, Nebraska, and Colorado with schools like BYU, Memphis, TCU, etc. Texas just needs any excuse to leave. This would be more than enough for them to bolt.

If I were one of the Powers That Be, I'd send UT, aTm, OU, and OKSt, to the SEC as a previous poster suggested. The rest of the Big 12 can merge with whatever remnants of the WAC/MWC are left after they get raided by the Pac-10.
