I have made my decision..

I have made the decision to go ahead and have my surgery. It will be having it in February. I have already been cleared for it. I am going to use my tax check to pay up my bills. I am nervous.

Has anyone on here had decompression surgery on the L5 and S1? I would like to know what its like when you go home and how well it releived your pain. Or if you had problems after surgery that ended up making you regret having it to start with.

Input will be helpful as I am very scared.

Thanks,
Gloria

By the way badgirl, or Gloria, you're going to be fine. I know you're scared as hell, its freakier than shit to have someone move around the nerves in your spine. But these guys have been in college 4 years, med school 4 years, and have seven years of neurosurgery before they even get to be on their own. And that would be if you had a doctor who was brand new. He probably has 20 years of experience under his belt, easy! They're superhuman in their skill.

The surgery will be the easy part, the recovery will hurt like hell. When you first get out you're going to be in a world of hurt, but they'll give you good meds to balance out. Then you're going to have to do exercises to strengthen back those stabilizers in your torso. Your Pelvic Floor muscles (believe it or not, the muscles people use to "flex" their genitals are very important to core stability, lol) and transverse abdominus (the muscle that pulls in your belly) will need lots of strengthening to get back to pre-surgery form. And you will be sore. You will be pissed you have to do it some days, but you will have no choice but to just go with it. And within a few months of getting this surgery you will be kicking yourself in the ass repeatedly for having not done it as soon as the pain started. Cause after a few months you'll feel great! You'll be able to sleep through the night without waking up sorer than a motherfucker. You'll be able to sit and/or stand in one position for a long period of time, and all sorts of great stuff! You'll literally be happier cause the pain won't be there, and you'll feel better physically just from the pain relief, not to mention the better rest you'll get from it.

When I was having my back problems, my doctor told me that the pain in my leg and foot would go away, but I would probably always have some kind of back pain. Someone who had it said the same thing in this thread earlier. Maybe she'll be the exception though. Who knows.

Soreness and pain are separate. The nerve pain should go away. She might have a sore back because of the surgery, but I have a feeling this will pale in comparison to what she is feeling, which is what I was trying to say. She said the most of the pain is in her leg and foot, so that's a good sign cause that's the stuff that can be fixed.

Besides, I'm trying to beeeee positive here!

In all likelihood, all the discomfort you're currently feeling will be gone when you wake up from surgery. Don't be afraid. Good luck.

I found out today they are doing my surgery as outpatient unless there are problems. This surprises me, if its outpatient why is it so serious I need to be out of work so long? Anyone else have back surgery (decompression surgery) as outpatient?

Did you try asking your doctor?

More than likely it comes down to simple math. When your patients found out you were going to be put in with them they told their Dr.'s they would rather go home than be stuck in a room with you. Sooo, they figured it would be easier to send you home instead of all the other patients. Simple math.

They are all private rooms so I find that highly unlikely.

If you have any questions regarding your surgery, I would recommend talking to your doctor. I'm sure it depends on what exactly they're doing while they're in there, as I'm sure there are different forms of decompression surgery. What goes for one person may not go for you.

I'd bet your insurance has a lot to do with it.
It should'nt be a problem though. I mean jeez, you're just getting a part swapped out. It's not like you have to grow entirely new bones and pack around a bunch of titanium around like I did.
If they're cutting on you tommorow and sending you home all I can say is my dinner be ready come saturday night. You can take it easy a day or so but I ain't putting up with no lollygaggin around.

Its hard to talk directly to the dr unless I make an appointment which costs me 40 dollars, a little to much to pay everytime I have to ask him something.
