SCHEFTER- Crennel to Chiefs Imminent

Giants' candidate Crennel joins Chiefs

One-time Giants assistant and former Browns head coach Romeo Crennel will not be the new Giants defensive coordinator. Crennel has been hired to run the Chiefs defense.

Crenell never interviewed with Tom Coughlin but the Giants did express some interest.

One candidate Coughlin has already interviewed, former Bills head coach Perry Fewell, was in Chicago to speak with head coach Lovie Smith about the Bears defensive coordinator job. Fewell is considered the front-runner.

Fewell, once Coughlin's defensive backs coach with the Jaguars, met last Thursday with Coughlin with the understanding he was in the running for the Bears defensive coordinator job. Fewell worked in St. Louis and Chicago for Smith and it appears the two will work together again.

Another interesting possibility: Mike Zimmer. His contract will soon expire with the Bengals. Zimmer successfully ran the defenses for the Cowboys and Falcons and did a solid job this season in Cincinnati. Zimmer may attract some interest around the league as a potential head-coaching candidate.

Tom Cable is expected to be fired as head coach of the Raiders and if he is, Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is again likely to get an interview. Gilbride last year interviewed for the job.

His work was marred? He had 2 rings prior to that. You don't get 5 rings without knowing how to run a defense. He will be a massive upgrade if the deal gets done.

Not to mention we don't have the 2 most important pieces of that success.

The hell we don't have the pieces. Bill has not won the SB without Romey and Charlie and Scott. He still has one hell of a team but the SB is all that matters espceially for NE since they won 3 in the last 10 years. They were outted at home this year in the first round. He is looking like he is overrated.

Yes, Weis and Crenell clearly weren't important. Belichick has won a lot without them.

I'm tired of this same old song and dance bullshit. Belichick was an awful HC before he struck gold with the Patriots. Weis and Crenell should be given more credit than they are for the successes in NE. Brady talks about Weis like he was pivotal in his career. Go over to Patriot message boards, they loved Romeo.

I can understand the BB is a god, but he didn't become a god on his own.

I don't think Weis and Romeo are good HC's by any stretch, but they are damn good coordinators and this team is lucky to have them.

Premature?

So they didn't just go 4-12 after bringing in 45 new guys without finding an impact player while overseeing the worst draft in perhaps the entire history of the franchise?

Really?

I'm extremely hopeful that this is a done deal and Romeo will tell Haley that he needs a big old fat boy at the NT position.
I'm pulling for Ryan Pickett in FA to fill that spot.
I don't know how I feel about the defense Romeo runs.

But I feel pretty confident he'll make this D-line a lot better. He's a technician of this 2-gap 3-4 D-line. That means that I also feel pretty confident that he'll be instrumental in being the right NT in too.

Well we also went 2-14 after having the maybe one of the most successful drafts in the history of the franchise (if it all bears out).

I think judging Pioli and Haley right now is premature as well.

Proclaiming them a failure is premature.

Judging (as in evaluating) them from day one is perfectly fair. That's what Clark should be doing, anyway.

History has shown repeatedly that coordinators do just fine in other stints. Head coaches tend to be unable to do it because they always demand more power, get it, and that ends up being the end of them. But guys like Wade Phillips, Gregg Williams, Mike Nolan, Dick Lebeau... these are examples of some really good coordinators who've repeated success in different places.

Crennel's history is a little scarier. But I guarantee that Shanahan becomes a mediocre head coach while Charlie Weis does a really good job with the Chiefs.

Maybe so.

But someone would have had to restrain me from going down on the sideline when 4/8/28 occurred. And there were a handful of these kinds of moments.

Let's hope it gets better; it sure as hell needs to.
