Life Its hard to have compassion sometimes. - Page 19

I sometimes have certain patients that I start out doing well with, but 3 or 4 hours into the shift I am sorry I cannot have compassion I may need to have. They are the ones who will ring that damn light off the wall I mean every 3 minutes. They want this and they want that, and at some point I will end up telling them "Your not the only patient on this floor, we have 20 other ones who also need our help."

She wanted orange juice so I took her some, then she rang out and said "I can't get this orange juice open" I told her she could open it there was nothing wrong with her hands to keep her from opening it." She said "I thought you were a nice nurse" i said I try to be.

I lose it with these kind of people and only people in the medical field could possible understand what its like. The ones who have never worked in a medical field probably think this is terrible way to be.

When you have a middle aged person who wets the bed although they don't do it at home and act like they can't walk to the bathroom to me is just being lazy when there is no diagnosis that says they cannot walk.

Ok I am blowing off some steam and it could go on forever

There's a compassion that works one of the corners downtown. It's not hard at all to have her. So I've been told.

i'm a floor nurse at the hospital in st. joe, and one of the things that really kills me is the belief that people consider this a resort...that we are there for their comfort, to run errands that kinda thing...im more than happy to help out however, but some people think you are there for their every little whim... infuriating sometimes. i've had a pt tell me that none of the other pts are important, this person is the only person i should be concerned with.

Of course people in a hospital might not be at their best, you know, since they are in there because they've had a heart attack or a stroke or pnuemonia or cancer or diabetes or liver or kidney failure or hemmoraging or seizures or they are having a baby or complications from pregnancy or broken bones or any number of things they may be stressed out about.

Its part of the job called customer service.

Yeah, how dare they want to be cared for when the hospital is probably billing them thousands of dollars a day.

The only time I was ever in the hospital, I had a weird kind of food poisoning. I had a stomach pump for several days and threw up constantly, and really didn't feel very good.

After I got the stomach pump out, I was dying for a shower, so I limped to the bathroom and showered. I limped back to the bed.

The nursing staff was very, very nice overall, but I remember one of them kind of gently chewing me out because I didn't notice that the shower curtain was outside the tub, so a lot of water got onto the floor and she had to mop it up.

I feel guilty about it now, but I remember at the time looking at her blankly and more or less ignoring her, thinking, "Spilling water on the bathroom floor is about 900th on my list of things to feel bad about right now."

Exactly. She's lucky it wasn't urine, shit, or vomit.

Once, when I was in UCLA recovering from a pretty complex gastrojejunostomy surgical procedure, I had a crew comprised of some of the hottest nurses I've ever seen - before or since.

I'll never forget those girls. They were totally awesome. One of them was named Karice and, at one point during my stay, I had almost convinced her to show me her tittahs while she was changing out my IV. I gave her the patented FAX lost puppy dog look and, with a shaky, hesitant voice, explained to her that, if I were to die, I wanted those to be the last things on Earth I gazed upon. She didn't comply with my request, but after I was released, we wound up dating for awhile and I eventually saw them anyhow. Now that I think of it, they probably will be one of the last things I remember when the time comes for me to pass on.

Anyways, I can attest from personal experience that some nurses do a great job. Not all of them get pissed off and testy over an occasional minor request.

I was in once with chest pain and a pretty nurse had to hook me up to the EKG machine. When she put that goop on me I got a stiffy. Later on I jerked off right in my hospital bed all hooked up to an IV and the ekg. Then I had to drag a whole bunch of shit with me into the bathroom to make an effort to clean up.
