And Circuit City liquidations are a joke. They actually contract with store liquidators that will jack the prices up, only to reduce them to a 'closeout' price.

When I saw one liquidating in KC earlier this year, they had 'closeout' prices on TVs that were higher than the sale prices at the store in Columbia, which hadn't been contracted out to the liquidators.

These liquidators are shady as hell. I hated CC well before I started seeing this stuff, I've hated them more since.

That's gonna be the standard now that the internet has facilitated the commoditization of inventory. Whereas they used to have to eventually sell everything, now they have the fallback of being able to jobber their remaining inventory to a healthy store. First noticed it when all those hardware stores went OOB in the mid-90s.

Whats ridiculous is those 'display' items that don't get marked down. I stopped by a Linens'n'Things that was a ghost town, down to selling the displays shelves, and they still had a Cuisinart coffee maker at 40% off!!!!!! only it was beat to heck and the lid of the carafe was missing, and the carafe itself had a dent in it. Still over $100.

Liquidators buy the inventory and try to sell if for all they can when there are mass closings of a retailer. It will appear that CC is having a blowout since it's in their store, but more than likely they've already sold the inventory for pennies on the dollar and the liquidator is pricing the goods as high as possible.

that is good to know. I thought it was just because they were going to send the goods back to another store or something

Why the heck wouldn't CC just do that on their own?

Bad news, especially for the nation's mall landlords. Whiel they're generally big REITs etc., they're going to get walloped by this. That's alot of empty big boxes.

They raise all the prices to manufacture retail price and then drop it from there.. So stuff that was selling cheaper normally, clearance models, old models, open box models all go back up to original price.

If you want a deal I suggest you hide what you want till the prices drop. There will not be any great deals until the very last weekend the store is open. Because A: It was already bought or B: It was hidden by an associate.

Empty stores all over the place. There's a big strip mall near me that has still never filled the space CompUSA vacated, then they lost Linens and Things last month. Losing anchor tenants hurts both the landlord and the smaller tenants who lose the extra foot traffic business. Bad news that snowballs.

They're bankrupt and don't want the expense of keeping employees and their benefits on the books. They need cash fast and that's the easiest way to do it. I'm not saying this is what's happening with CC, but it happens in most large retail bankruptcies.
