The Pioli Watch Thread

I'm hijacking the thread starter to use for an "updates" area. Sorry cardken. Here are a few recent updates:

Pioli would find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs' home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli." Right.

But he's NOT the sports section. He's an occasional columnist who's doing less and less work for the Star.

He's a great writer.

But the KC Star Sports section getting national acclaim?

They don't break any stories of nationwide interest (i.e. the SF Chronicles and the Balco scandal), they don't cover high-profile teams like the Lakers, Dodgers, Mets, Giants or Yankees (let alone the Cubs or Red Sox) and their beat writers (like Teicher) flat-out suck.
http://www.kansascity.com/awards/

"Sports Daily won top-10 honors for its Sunday sections and special sections. The Star also led all big-circulation newspapers in 2006 with seven top-10 finishes in the contest’s writing categories."

I don't really give that much of a shit about the Star but it is funny to hear people bitch and moan about the beat writing. They are dependent on the Chiefs organization. Who isn't all that information friendly.

So which way do CPers prefer to slam them because they will be able to either way. Either they pass on what they can confirm from the organization or they could go on unnamed sources and rumors that may or may not pan out because that is the nature of the process.

But what do I know THEY ARE THE WORSTEST IN THE HISTORY OF WRITING!!!

That's true now, but he did receive those awards when the Star was his meal-ticket, and I'd say he's still their main attraction, although some would argue it's Whitlock.

In any case, papers are dying everywhere, the Star hasn't cornered the market on that. Just the way of things.

Have you ever listened to Teicher on the radio? He is on 610 once a week or so and pretty much what he says the opposite happens. For someone that practically lives at Arrowhead he doesn't get good info or has lousy sources.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

This thread is like climbing Everest. I read 12 pages to get to 54, then the ****er is at 58, now it will be at 60 by the time I post this, and the worst part is its like some weird universe where every post is repeated every 6 pages, really it is.

Its like scaling Everest and being 100 feet from the peak, but a cloud bank blocks your view, as you climb through it you find yourself halfway up the ****ing mountain.

Will somebody at the peak throw a large rock at me from up there? This shit is getting reeruned Im grouchy and want a new GM right NAO!

Interesting take on Pioli from the Boston Globe chat area:

Update from someone inside the Chiefs organization!
Submitted by Rocky Alden on January 7, 2009 - 6:13pm.

Okay gang, as many of you know I still have friends at the highest level in the Chiefs organization and have this info to share with full confidence: Scott Pioli is the new GM. His announcement will come Thursday or Friday at the latest. Clark and Scott are working out the finer points of his contract tonight (money & control), but the deal is sealed. Also, Clark informed Herm Edwards and his coaching staff that they will be released. All assistants can reapply through Scott.

I only share this information because I'm no longer with the team and it's fun to share that a new day is dawning at Arrowhead. Scott Pioli will quickly move to clean out the front office and hire a new coach.

The only info I have on the new coach is it will not be Kirk Ferentz from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kirk coaches his son at Iowa and does not want to leave until his son graduates.

Mike Shanahan has contacted Pioli, but I don't know any info beyond that.

Zach again, I'm not busting your balls so please don't take it personally.

But I just don't see how the Star is nationally recognized when they don't break any stories and more to the point, the teams they cover certainly aren't newsworthy on a national scale.

I like both Whitlock and Posnanski's columns and always have. But they aren't "journalists" per se, they editorialize and comment, which is far different than actual sports reporting.

And yes, JoPo's writing for SI has been great.
