The Pioli Watch Thread

I'm hijacking the thread starter to use for an "updates" area. Sorry cardken. Here are a few recent updates:

Pioli would find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs' home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Wow.

I think Clark is going to put the full court press on Pioli and do all it takes to get him signed and if he can't, move on after that.
Take a step back.

We're saying that Clark isn't going to make an offer to Pioli without interviewing others on his list.

And who the hell offers someone a job at the end of an interview?

It was posted here earlier that one of the hang-ups in Cleveland was that Pioli wants total control both football and admin. If that is true it may not be a deal breaker for Pioli, but it will be for Clark. He has said publicly that they are two separate positions in KC.

The Seahawks offered him the job a couple years ago without interviewing him.

ESPN is reporting that Mangini is indeed the top choice for HC of Browns which makes it likely that the pro personel guy from Baltimore is now leading candidate for GM job (sorry, can't remember his name).

I honestly don't think Pioli is the right guy for the Chiefs. I really don't like the idea of having McDaniels for Ferentz as HC. Honestly even though college HC's never make a successful jump, I would rather have Ferentz. Thats how bad I think McDaniles will be. Pioli would likely want to run a 3-4 defense here, because thats what hes used to getting players for. I would love to run a 3-4, but I don't think the Chiefs should make the switch right now...

I'm just saying, this is ESPN's exact words. How the guy from Baltimore is in the mix, I don't know.

After Mangini hypocritically ratted the Patriots out I'm surprised he's considered for a HC job anywhere by anybody.

The rumor has been that Pioli doesn't want to work with Mangini...that's why it's kinda been one or the other for the Browns.

I want no part of McDaniels, but am very comfortable with Ferentz. Pioli is a smart man who has worked with both and understands the profile for a good HC is not a smart coordinator but a legitimate leader. Ferentz fits that much better than McDaniels. But I still like Spagnuolo best of all because of the huge endorsement he gets unanimously from every player that has ever worked with him.

Report: McDaniels wowed the Browns

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/pla...=137141&spln=1

According to NFL.com's Adam Schefter, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels "wowed" the Browns during his three-plus interview for the team's head-coaching job Friday.

Schefter hints that McDaniels might have passed Eric Mangini on the team's wish list and could spur Cleveland to be the first team to hire a coach. Schefter also says McDaniels won't necessarily come in a package with Pats VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli. The Browns may hire a coach before a GM.

Sources: Mangini had 'compelling' interview

Eric Mangini, fired Monday by the New York Jets, is emerging as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, team and league sources said Saturday.

The Browns have continued their search process, interviewing other candidates, but sources say Mangini had a "compelling" interview and owner Randy Lerner is fascinated with him.

If Mangini gets the job to replace the fired Romeo Crennel, the sources said the favorite to become the team's general manager would be George Kokinis, who is the director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens.

Kokinis and Mangini each were members of the Browns organization when Bill Belichick was coach. Mangini formally joined the staff as an assistant coach in 1995. Kokinis was a scout from 1991 to 1995 before moving with the team to Baltimore.

Scott Pioli, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, has been considered the favorite for the GM job, but sources say his demands were "extreme," and Lerner is hesitant to accept the terms unless there is some level of compromise.

Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs no later than Monday.

If Pioli is hired, the leading head coaching candidates are believed to be Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who also has interviewed with Lerner. McDaniels has not been ruled out after an impressive interview Friday, one team source said.

As the list of names indicate, Lerner keeps reaching for the Belichick tree -- from Pioli, to Ferentz (who worked with Pioli in Cleveland), to Mangini, to Kokinis, to McDaniels.

Even though Kokinis would be the leading GM candidate with Mangini as coach, current Browns director of player personnel T.J. McCreight also is in the running.

Lerner's firing of former GM Phil Savage had little or nothing to do with Savage's personnel decisions; Lerner specifically said the dismissal stemmed from a difference in "management style."

Cleveland fans will have a ****ing cow if Mangini is hired.

It would be a hilarious meltdown on all of Browns' message boards.
