Huggins latest recruit and Doyel's take on the KSU mens bball coaching position....

Figured I might as well start a little fire on a boring night. Huggins' latest recruit, Tyree Evans, has been accused of statutory rape (he was charged along with a group of guys...a gang rape if you will) and battery of a child. Yes, I know, innocent until proven guilty, and he's probably going to get out of it, but the media and public opinion will still always label him as an "alleged rapist" (it's not right, but that's how it always pans out). That's the first story. The second story was CBS Sportsline columnist Gregg Doyel's list of the 10 worst men's coaching jobs in the nation where he refers to Manhattan, KS as "a suburb of Hades." I'm not gonna lie, Doyel has something against Manhattan and Huggins, and KSU fans hate it that he spews his sentiments in his columns every now and then. I guess you could call him the polar opposite of Kevin Keitzman, who spews his anti-KU sentiments on a daily basis over the radio waves.

Anywho, just wanting to hear some opinions (heh, I came to the right place for that).

KSU will take player if he's cleared
Tyree Evans, one of the top scorers in Virginia high school history, is facing a rape charge in Massachusetts.
BY JEFFREY MARTIN
The Wichita Eagle
As a senior at George Wythe High in Richmond, Va., Tyree Evans scored 884 points, a season total exceeded in the state by only Allen Iverson and Moses Malone.

He scorched Wythe's rival, L.C. Bird, for 51 points. He ripped off 34 second-half points in a state tournament semifinal loss, prompting several college coaches in attendance to shake their heads.

If all goes as Evans plans and he ends up playing for Bob Huggins at Kansas State next season, imagine the reaction then.

Evans, a 6-foot-3 guard, was indicted in September 2005 on charges of statutory rape and indecent assault and battery on a child stemming from an October 2004 incident while he was a postgraduate student at the Winchendon (Mass.) School.

Evans was one of five individuals originally charged in connection to the rape of a female classmate, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges in March. On May 8, his lawyer filed a motion in Worcester Superior Court to dismiss the case. According to the office of Worcester District Attorney John J. Conte, Evans' next court appearance is scheduled for May 30. No trial date has been set.

Evans is confident the case will be thrown out.

If so, he says he'll join Huggins in Manhattan.

Evans originally planned on playing for Huggins at Cincinnati. But his grades were insufficient after graduating from Wythe in 2004, and he enrolled at Winchendon. Cincinnati wouldn't admit him in 2005 while charges were pending.

In the past year, while neither was involved in organized basketball, Evans said Huggins remained in contact.

"He's like a second dad to me," Evans said Monday. "He's been loyal to me, and I've been loyal to him. His word is his bond.... I'm interested. I'll be there in the fall."

The charges, if he's innocent, wouldn't be an issue for K-State, said Jim Epps, senior associate athletic director.

"Whatever he was charged with, if he was found innocent, I don't think we'd say, 'He was charged with a crime but found not guilty, so we're not going to recruit him,' " Epps said. "From our perspective, if he's exonerated, our message to Coach Huggins is to go ahead and recruit the kid."

But there is the issue of perception, whether this will be interpreted as another controversial move by a controversial coach.

As in, there Huggins goes again.

"If we were afraid of public criticism, we wouldn't have hired Bob Huggins," K-State athletic director Tim Weiser said. "I don't think we'd back away from giving a young man or woman a chance if we knew whatever they were involved with before wouldn't be an issue under our care at K-State."

Frank McMillan, Evans' former coach at Wythe, thinks Evans is as good as former Duke star J.J. Redick, who played his high school ball nearby.

"He's probably the best I've ever coached," McMillan said. "With the proper coaching, he'll be as good as anyone."

Mike Byrnes, his coach at Winchendon, believes Evans will make a lot of money in the pros.

"He does not back down from a soul," Byrnes said. "If he goes to K-State, he'll be on the Big 12 All-Rookie Team."

Evans? He compares himself to Chicago Bulls guard Ben Gordon -- but with a slight variation.

"I jump a little higher, and I'm definitely a lot faster," Evans said. "I run a 4.4 40."

Evans flirted with the notion of playing football in college. As a junior, he finished with more than 1,000 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. Penn State was interested, and according to McMillan, Florida and Florida State inquired.

He is still intrigued by the possibility, insisting "there ain't no corner around that can check me one-on-one.

"But I just want to see how my freshman year goes."

He seems certain he'll be in Manhattan in September.

"It's going to be dismissed -- that's all I can tell you about that," Evans said. "And when this stuff is over, I'm going to be at K-State.

"I'm going to be playing for Coach Huggins at K-State."

10. Kansas State: If everything breaks right, Bob Huggins is going to win so big at Kansas State you'll wonder how the Wildcats ever got onto this list. But if everything breaks wrong -- if O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker go to Southern California or just turn pro; and if Michael Beasley and Herb Pope decide not to be traded to Kansas State like pieces of horse flesh -- Huggins will find out just how bad this job really is. When the NCAA ruled that schools can't use private planes to fly in recruits, it was a shattering blow in Manhattan, Kan., a suburb of Hades.

P.S. Sorry you lost your skinny point guard to MU.

It's because of the run and hide mentality of cowardly poseurs (cp sp) like yourself. I could run the academic fraud stuff all day. But you already know KU has no integrity. So here you are crying about a guy who is going to to be found innocent, and play ball at KSU. It's all you have. It's weak. And unoriginal. But it's all you've got.

For a guy who 'has no concern' you sure post a lot about KSU.

As for Hannah.... if his Mom wants him at MU, then he should go. I'm sure the Mizzou board will be full of Momma Hannah posts like your board was full of Langford's Momma babble a few seasons back.

Hugg's has a plan. He'll get somebody else. Bitch.

BSPimp - kU sure had a hard time playing "fast" and handling pressure when I saw them last year... so I'll take my chances. I'll also give Anderson a season or two to get his players to MU before judging the system's viability in the Big 12.

They played their best when they played fast.

I read that KSUck had already used all of their scholies and if they had signed Hannah they would have to boot somebody. But I'm sure that wouldn't bother "Huggy".

Ohhhh Kevin....can I call you Kevin?

I never said a single time that I thought Mr. Evans was guilty. I just put the facts out there for discussion. You just seem to take bad press toward KSU on a way too personal level. Where I as a "cowardly bitch who runs and hides" could really care less about the bad press that the media gives KU. That's something that comes with being in the spotlight all the time. We're used to it. KSU is just now finding that out. Welcome to the big time Kevin. You're gonna love it!

Over the last few days, according to published stories, Stefhon Hannah has been verbally committed to Kansas State, has actually sent a signed letter of intent to Kansas State, has been prevented from being a Wildcat by his mother and finally signed with Missouri. At least if you believe everything you read.

Hannah averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists as a sophomore.

"That's false," Hannah said of the claim that his mother refused to sign a letter of intent for him to attend Kansas State. "What happened was I signed a letter to Kansas State and sent it to my mom. She signed one to Missouri and sent it to me."

Hannah said the plan was for him to make his decision and to have the extra required signature put on the letter and sent whichever school he chose. He said that school was Missouri and he never actually sent a letter of intent to K-State.

The 6-foot-1 point guard did commit verbally to the Wildcat coaches following a May 11th official visit to Manhattan.

"I came off my visit and, you know, when you come back from a visit, you always like it," Hannah said. "Everything in my head was Kansas State, Kansas State, Kansas State. I kind of ended up forgetting how much I liked Missouri. I had signed the paper for Kansas State and my mom just told me to make sure I thought about it and that was what I really wanted to do."

In the end, Hannah decided that was not what he wanted. But he did have plenty of good things to say about K-State and said his mother was indeed the deciding factor.

"I had liked them both," Hannah said. "I had a good time at Missouri and I had a nice time at Kansas State. I couldn't decide on my own. It was neck and neck, like a tie. My mother was the tiebreaker."

The deciding factor for Hannah, and for his mother, was Missouri's new coach, Mike Anderson.

"She liked that the coach is a family oriented, well-rounded man," Hannah said. "He kept the coaching staff in his family. His nephew is on the coaching staff. He was always real respectful, too. Whenever he would call the house, he would ask to speak to my mother first and then to speak to me. My mom and I respected that."

Anderson did have to overcome one big thing in his first head-to-head recruiting battle with Huggins. During his last 13 years at Cincinnati, Huggins had sent 12 players into the NBA. Anderson can't come close to matching that claim, having been a head coach for just four seasons.

"Everybody talked about Bob Huggins taking players to the pros," Hannah said. "My mother says you can go to the NBA no matter where you go to school. If you work hard enough, they'll find you. The coach should not be a factor for that. Plus, I felt that Mike Anderson can help me become a man and graduate."

The newest Tiger played a lot of shooting guard as a Chicago prep star.

Speaking of graduating, Hannah said he has one summer school class to finish up at Chipola to earn his associate's degree. He will be finished after the first summer session and head to Columbia after that. While Hannah played the point at Chipola, he was classified as a shooting guard out of high school.

"I feel more comfortable playing the two but people say I'm too small. It didn't seem to stop me this summer though," Hannah said in October of his senior year. "I know they say it's different at the college level but I think I can do what I gotta do regardless."

Hannah had games of 34, 38 and 45 points that summer. He also was Chipola's leading scorer, while averaging more than six assists per game. Hannah said Anderson did not specify which spot he would play at Mizzou.

"He told me he would not hold me to one position," Hannah said. "I know I can do both. I can be a point guard when I need to, but I can score when I need to. He told me not to worry about a position and to just play basketball."

Like the rest of the recruits in Anderson's first class at Missouri, Hannah said his up-and-down the court style was a major drawing card.

"I watched them when he was at UAB a lot," Hannah said. "I like the way he plays, up and down. His players may make a mistake, but they don't have to look around and worry. They just play basketball."

And now, finally, Hannah can do just that.

"It's a relief," Hannah said of the end of the recruiting process. "I'm so happy. I am so happy."

I'm concerned. I'm concerned that when Huggins doesn't pan out and these recruits he's bringing in don't play as a team and try to be a bunch of Kobe's and all go pro after 2 years that William's head will ACTUALLY explode.

Not to mention Huggins will probably leave for a higher profile job IF he has a couple winning seasons.

It must really suck to be that ignorant. Honestly, unless you know what you are talking about, it might be better just to .

He's coaching in the B12. He is having NO problems recruiting to Manhattan. He will get tremendous fan and administration support. I know you and DJ are too young and ingnorant to know this, but KSU used to be a very good Basketball Program. Huggins will be in Manhattan for the next 10 years. Deal with it.

So SHUT THE HELL UP!

I take that as an insult. There is nothing wrong with JC. I have lived here for 40+ years. JC is about to double in size in the next 3-5 years and we'll see who is the Suburb of who.

I agree that KSU used to be a good basketball school, but if you think Huggins wouldn't bolt to a higher profile school, then you just don't know as much as you think you know.

KSU is not one of the schools that coaches consider ending their career at; it is not a destination school for college basketball coaches. That is a fact.
