Then there were teams like the Chargers and Broncos who have bookends for the foreseeable future and just don’t have the need.

Clark loves Andy and Veach. Their seats are probably ice cold. 5 SB’s in 6 years tends to buy you some comfortable leeway.

They got Moore so they chase the luxury of being patient. Breer made a great point that it wasn’t so much the risk of Simmons but the situation teams were in to afford the risk.

Think only the Chiefs, Packers and Ravens were realistic opportunities for him in rd 1.
Veach has finally come around. He's finally accepted what he must do to fix the Left Tackle problem. And it is to seriously inject some capital into the position. He could have fixed the issue by making Trent Williams the highest paid Tackle in the NFL. But he didn't do that. Trent said he was close to signing here. Veach refused.

He has tried taking 2nd and 3rd round Tackle prospects like Kingsley and Wanya. But he's slowly figuring out that 2nd and 3rd round Tackles don't solve your Tackle problems.

He traded a 1st for Orlando Brown which was a solid stop gap, but didn't solve the issue long term.

He overpaid a mediocre Tackle named Jawaan Taylor because he didn't want to pay for a top Tackle.

He signed a mediocre Tackle named Jaylon Moore as a 2 year stop gap. That isn't a solution.

He's finally actually fully invested into the position with a 1st round pick. He's finally taking action.

Dumpster diving only produced trash.

I mean, there's a lot of hyperbolic half-truths here.

Complaining he hasn't done enough to try to address the second-most-difficult position to adequately fill in the NFL is silly.

He had an above-average starter at LT in Eric Fisher. That dude shredded his Achilles'. Veach's response was to try to sign Trent Williams long-term, and the 49ers went to a stupid amount of money. Then traded a 1st for a solid level starter.

Who they tried to commit to and keep long-term despite him having a few flaws, but he and his agent played themselves.

The Chiefs didn't sign Jawaan Taylor to his deal because "He didn't want to pay for a top tackle." They tried to pay the only guy on that FA market MORE than what they paid Taylor.

When you're picking 30 or later every single season, easy-button solutions don't fall to you in the draft. Even Simmons is not an easy-button solution. He carries a huge amount of risk.

He's finally investing some REAL capital into the Tackle Position. And yes, I do agree that Simmons is not a guarantee. But he is a genuine and honest attempt (the first real committed attempt to fix the problem) of Veach's career to fix Left Tackle long term.

1. Invest a 1st round pick at Tackle

2. Pony up and reset the Tackle market with a top Tackle like Trent

Either of these would have been perfectly F'ing appropriate. I just wish it didn't take so long.

By the way if Simmons completely bombed I think it would be absolutely unfair to criticize Veach about the pick. At least he is FINALLY attempting to seriously address the issue long term.

The Chiefs did offer a 6 year deal worth $139 million to OBJ that he rejected (and ended up taking less on the open free agency market to play for Cincy).

Yeah I don’t think there’s any question they’ve tried to fix the tackle position as a whole every possible way with serious assets.

-offered a top contract to Trent Williams and pursued him hard in FA
-gave up a 1st rd pick for Orlando Brown Jr
-offered a big contract to Orlando Brown Jr
-drafted Lucas Niang in the 3rd rd
-drafted Wanya Morris in the 3rd rd
-drafted Kingsley Suamatia in the 2nd rd
-paid Jawaan Taylor a top contract
-signed Jaylon Moore to a contract
-drafted Josh Simmons in then 1st rd

Really hope Josh Simmons works out bc this tackle carousel has been brutal.

We were in the Trent Williams market the same offseason we traded for OBJ. SF just gave him money we weren't capable of giving without crippling our cap.

Don't act like Veach has been avoiding the LT position. He's been at this every year ever since Fisher tore his ACL.

OBJ got us through a few years decently.

The issue is once we didn't resign him we were no longer getting by but playing projects and older, injured vets the last 2.

You can say the last two years were not great but if the Chiefs hit on Simmons the LT roller coaster can finally come to an end.

You left out Donovan Smith. But that’s a good summary

We are paid Thuney, Taylor and Kelce a lot of money. I'm not saying we should have cut Kelce, but choosing Kelce over Trent Williams is a decision.

We won 2 super bowls and just went to a third in a row. It’s really hard to argue against that decision.

A 2nd and 3rd round pick at Left Tackle is a half assed attempt to fix the problem. This isn't the Tight End or Center position.

I'll give Veach credit where it's due. He did hit a Grand Slam at the most important position. The QB position. Draft (or scout) the best QB in the league then you might win some games.
