Alternate Reality Game 1: Chiefs
The original post is below in blue, but let's summarize it here based on the past few years.
1. If you're a new player, start with the current Chiefs roster. If you've been playing for a while you'll have your own evolved roster. 2. You can add any free agent that the Chiefs add. 3. You lose any free agent that the Chiefs lose, but only if they were on the Chiefs' roster when you began playing. 4. You can accept or reject any trade the Chiefs make as long as any Chiefs player involved is currently on your roster. 5. You do not get players that the Chiefs draft. You draft your own players, using the same draft picks that the Chiefs have. 6. You can trade down ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade down before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.) If you trade down after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 25 percent. Any trade down must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up. (In other words, if you trade away one draft pick you cannot pick up more than three in return.) The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. See the examples at the bottom of the post. 6. You can trade up ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade up before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.). If you trade up after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 15 percent. Any trade up must involve only the picks of one NFL team. The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. 7. By the beginning of the season, you must reduce your total roster to include only 53 players. Added in 2025: 8. We can sign three non-Chiefs UDFAs as part of our draft. (Update this year's draft with your picks.) 9. On final cutdown, we can put three rookies or players on IR onto a "reserve" list. Original post: You can ignore this now.
Spoiler!
Added Rules and Reminders: 1. Remember that you can draft undrafted rookies, so you don't have to select only guys who were drafted. 2. Anyone can change their rookie draft selections at any time, UNTIL we reach ten days before training camp. At that point, all picks will be locked in. 3. Each team can do ONE trade of draft picks if they like, using this chart:http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...t-trade-chart/. However, if you're trading up, you have to pay 15 percent more than the stated value of the picks you're obtaining. If you're trading down, your pick's value will be discounted by 25 percent. For example, if you want to trade up from the 20th pick in the 1st to the 10th pick, you can see from the chart that the 20th pick is worth 259 points. The 10th pick is normally 369 points, but by paying 15 percent more, it will cost you 1.15*369, or 424 points. So you would need to come up with another 165 points to make the deal (424-259) For example, if you want to trade down from the 20th pick in the 1st and pick up the 10th pick in the 2nd, your 20th pick would normally be worth 259 points, but in this game it will be worth 25 percent less, or 194 points. The 10th pick in the 2nd is worth 142 points, so you can get 52 points back from the other team. (Remember that you cannot pick up more than two extra picks in the trade, so consider your math carefully.) You can do only ONE draft-pick trade up and ONE draft-pick trade down, and in each case you can only trade with one other team for their own picks. (In other words, you couldn't take the 52 points in the above example from a third team.) Last edited by Rain Man; Yesterday at 04:41 PM.. |

Only rookie free agents seems correct. Never losing our drafted players is enough of an advantage - adding regular free agents would break the spirit of this game. Not proposing that.
I'm game for the UDFA adjustment - but think Crow should get to weigh in as this could be a significant adjustment to the game. |

I'd be willing to allow us to swap out 2 UDFAs from other teams for UDFAs from the Chiefs. I think if you allow too many, you can swap out too many of the best UDFA prospects for the ones that are completely unlikely to have a shot at anything outside of just camp fodder.
One thing I was thinking about in a similar light is the roster. It would be so nice to be able to have a small practice squad, say up to 5, maybe with the caveat that the players have to be a 7th-round pick or UDFA. |

So are you guys thinking swap UDFAs or are you thinking choose your UDFAs?
I guess I kind of do like the "Choose your favorite 3-4" over swapping out a couple. For some reason I had swap in my head. Being realistic, the chances of any of these guys making a roster is pretty low but sometimes they hang around on a PS then eventually make the team like Remigio. |

My worry would be that there's probably going to be some blurring in terms of who's actually a rookie, and a lot of guys come and go so cutting a UDFA is probably not going to make much difference.
How about we say that we can add 3 non-Chiefs UDFAs and we have a three-person practice squad/injured reserve where we can stash players?

3 for IR/PS is fair. At least we can hang onto a guy instead of having to consider cutting him just because of a significant injury. |

Or hey, how about this?
We have our previous 53-man roster. Maybe along with the draft, we can sign UDFAs to match cuts or losses to our 53-man roster. These losses would be ... 1. Any free agency losses by Chiefs (e.g., Justin Reid and Tershawn Wharton this year) 2. Any player who retired in the offseason. 3. Any player that you just know won't get a roster spot this year (i.e., they stink and you've got other guys at the position). This would be rare but not unheard of. I guess you could also flat-out cut a guy if you're in love with a UDFA that you want to sign. You would need to declare them gone immediately after the draft and remove them from your training camp roster in order to replace them with a UDFA. So for example, as I announce my draft, I would also say... UDFA signings Justin Reid (free agency) is being replaced by Tim McUDFA, RB, Minnesota Tershawn Wharton (free agency) is being replaced by Willie O'Udfa, K, Montana State Jason Kelce (retired) is being replaced by Mdeke Udfabenze, QB, Northwestern john elway (cut due to mediocrity) is being replaced by Theodore Udfaskiewiecz, DE, Georgia This system would be simple, and it would kind of work to offset losses. As far as a practice squad/IR, maybe 3 guys and they can only be rookies or on IR when you make the final cuts.

Honestly, I'd rather keep it more simple with regard to the UDFAs. Chiefs UDFAs plus 3 of your choice from other rosters is fine by me. We usually have enough roster turnover to support 3 in your scenario anyhow so why complicate the process.
As for the PS/IR, I'm fine with what you have there. Rookie or on IR/PUP at final cuts. |

I lean towards Crow's model / simplicity, but as the "newbie" (4 seasons in) I'm game for whatever you grizzled vega decide. I don't need a vote.

I'll leave it to Rainman to cement it in stone. He created the game and continually has improved it over the years. I'm game for the proposed changes or no changes, whichever is decided.

Okay, it's settled.
1. We can sign three non-Chiefs UDFAs as part of our draft. (Update this year's draft with your picks.) 2. On final cutdown, we can put three rookies or players on IR onto a "reserve" list. Annnnnd... go. I'll add this to the very messy OP.

If I want additional UDFAs I can still use my draft capital, correct?

If you like them a lot, I guess one strategy would be trade down a 5th or maybe 6th rounder into 3 7th rounders to use. But you'd have to like the UDFAs more than the NFL's actual 7th round picks.
