Retirement Thread

After the positive responses and congratulations on my Retirement thread, the idea came to me that there should be a thread that helps everyone prepare for the eventuality of retirement.

There were many great ideas, comments and great suggestions that came out of the conversation. What I would like to do is put this here as a repository for information for anyone who is:
  • Ready to retire
  • Close to retirement
  • Beginning to plan for retirement

One of the things I came to find out is that no matter how much I had thought I was prepared for retirement, there were still things I had not pondered or prepared for.

So this thread is for all your questions, comments, advice to help others that are close to retirement.

I mean....this board is about a year and a half away from being around for a quarter of a century, and many of us who have been around are there already.

So, please feel free to contribute!

I have a hard time believing they won't tax it. After all, they stole from it or there wouldn't be any discussion about lack of funds. IOUs don't earn interest. I paid 15% into this system for my entire career and about 20% into my retirement. People can say that boomers are stealing from the system however I maintain that the money I have paid has been stolen (by both parties) and the system would be solvent if it had been managed and not raided.

Won't argue any of that. Let's ebb the conversation in a different direction or this will not be moved to the Political Forum.

I've been retired for a couple of years. I occasionally dream about work, but it's generally about the people and not necessarily the work. I also have dreams about my youth. Mostly about the house I grew up in and old friends.

I don't blame you for doing what you are doing....I only ended up having to work those additional months because they took their sweet time finding someone to replace me....beyond the normal tasks assigned to my position I took additional tasks when people left the company after my company acquired them.

I do not miss the work....but I do miss people I cared about at work. I actually have lunch with a couple of them at least 2 times a month.

All....I am moving my Cardiac Rehab follow ups to this thread (thanks BRC for the suggestion)

My third week of cardiac rehab really kicked my butt big time....

Treadmill walk for 10 minutes at a medium pace...keeping the Watts level at 45...

Bicycle ride for 10 minutes at a medium pace....keeping the Watts level at 55...

Another version of the bicycle ride at a medium pace for 10 minutes...resistance greater and Watts level at 45...

Arm pedal only for 10 minutes with Watts at 45

30 leg lifts with a 10 lb weight on each leg...(this one once again stayed normal)

60 stand up/sit down without using my arms....

30 arm bends with 7.5 lb weight each arm...

20 pushups...

30 Step Up/Step down for each leg

Resistance bands height level- 30 pullbacks focusing on upper body strength

Resistance bands 9 feet - 30 pull downs again focusing on upper body strength

For some reason the pedal only bicycle was really doing my legs in yesterday. I was struggling just to finish that one.

Had no issues with the others like arm pedals and the arm & pedal machines...

The good sign though is that I am only experiencing fatigue that is normal with these workouts and my Blood Oxygen Content is staying between 96-98 throughout the whole workout. I am not having any chest pains or other signs....

But dang....my muscles are still getting used to all this.

I am hoping that by moving this to the Retirement Thread I can coerce anyone else who is going thru some sort of rehab will contribute....we can all encourage each other to stay on track so we can see Mahomes pass Brady in the # of Super Bowls won.

A few years ago, my contract had me working in an Air Force office where I was easily 20+ years older than the next oldest person in the office. At the end of every stand-up, the XO would lead the office in doing twenty push-ups, so of course, I chose to drop and knock them out too, but I usually did twenty-five.

One of the Master Sergeants came over and told me that since I was a civilian (and by implication "old"), I wasn't required to do the push-ups.

My reply was, "I spent too long in the Army to let some airmen outdo me in push-ups."

The look on his face was priceless.

I have lost about 84 lbs since my first heart attack 2 1!2 years ago and now my more recent one. The one thing my Cardiologist has told me is that I have a good recovery capability...i.e., I bounce back well.

Just before I had my first heart attack I probably wouldn't have been able to do 5 push-ups....let alone walk a half mile.

I agree this appears aggressive but the Rehab group was the one recommended by my Cardiologist and they have a pretty good success rate.

Thats some great progress.

I’m starting physical therapy at the end of this month for a bulging disc issue.

That's a lot. I find at 63 going on 64 that life is a constant state of rehab. I've been getting in some workouts and one thing I see on your list is Step Ups. I do those to strengthen my legs and hips and it really helps with the issue I have there. I'll hold a kettlebell in each hand and I add about four inches in height. It really gets my heart rate up.

Keep it up!

Had to fix something here....I had too many 0's on the Resistance Band Pull Down's.....I only do 30 not 300....my arms would have been jello if I had done 300.

It's bad enough my arms are jello after doing the push ups.
