Science Fiction and Fantasy Books Only Thread

There is a great thread in the lounge about Books in general, but to be honest, all I really want to read is Sci-Fi (including post-apocalyptic), and Fantasy.

In this OP I will compile every poster's top 3 Fantasy/SciFi suggestions if they give me them. I will try to keep the posters in alphabetical order in case you want to find someone's suggestions easier.

CP POSTER SUGGESTIONS

Baby Lee
1. Fritz Lieber's Swords Against series.
2. George R.R. Martin's SoIaF series [no brainer that will probably make tons of other lists]
3. Umberto Eco, Foucalt's Pendulum [a little more obscure/forgotten to make up for GRRM]

Frosty
1.Raymond Feist - Riftwar Saga
2.Terry Brooks - Shannara series (starting with the Knight of the Word books)
3.Tad Williams - Memory, Sorrow and Thorn

Huffmeister
(1) Dune - Frank Herbert
(2) The Stand - Stephen King (1000+ page unabridged)
(3) Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein (checkout the song by Yes, too. lots of great bass)

Jawshco
1. "Book of the Long Sun" by Gene Wolfe
2. "Paradise War" by Stephen R Lawhead
3. "The Dragonbone Chair" by Tad Williams

listopencil
1. Edgar Rice Burroughs, any series
2. Robert Heinlein, everything he has written in chronological order (but read Starship Troopers first)
3. Doc Smith's Lensman series

vailpass
1. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume 1, 2A & 2B books are a gold mine for sampling the evolution of sci-fi. (below)
2.The Nebula Awards and Hugo Awards (selected yearly, pick a year)
3. Years Best SF Annual publication, pick any volume from 1 to the current volume 17

It probably won’t until the last two or three hundred pages. The first 75% of that book was a slog.

I’ll say it’s worth it, though. Words of Radiance and Oathbringer are two of my favorite books of all time.

Appreciate the perspective. I read another hundred pages this weekend, so about 60% through, and I feel like it's about to get going.

It most likely will. Way of Kings was my first Sanderson read so I was unfamiliar with what they call the “Sanderlanche”. Sounds like you’re coming up on that now.

Where are you in the book, by the way? I’d like to live vicariously through you.

Lol, Sanderlanche. I hadn't heard that before. Feels appropriate.

I stumbled across Old Man's War and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I was a little surprised to find out that the first book in the series is nearly 20 years old (!) and that the rights to the entire series have been bought by Netflix and is in pre-production (allegedly).

The basic synopsis is that Earth is turned into a massive sadistic game show for an intergalactic audience with life and death stakes. The dust jacket description and cover art is honestly a bit of a turn off (I avoided it for a long time), but it’s a fantastic listen and has become one of my all time favorites.
I received this book as a Christmas present. The story starts off with a bang and never lets up. this book is amazing. I've been told that the audiobook version is even better. so I will probably switch over to that. Still... I havent tore through a book, cover to cover, this fast since ASoIaF:GoT. This book deifinitely targets my demogrphic but feels like it was it was written for me, specifically.

I have this one sitting on my nightstand in the queue to read. Good friend highly recommended it.

I enjoyed that series quite a lot.

Do not look up the author on social media. Might ruin it for you.

Copy that.

I have another book of his I haven't started yet - Starter Villain. I was considering giving it a go, but I might go find Dungeon Crawler first with all the positive feedback everyone's giving it.

I can't remember if I read that one or not, but I've read a few books outside the Old Man's War series, and they were all pretty solid.

Coming to the end of Rhythm of War. Series has been great so far. There are a few character chapters that I have to force myself to get through, but nothing egregious. I just picked up book 5 from the library, so I'll start digging into that next week hopefully. Did you read 5 yet?

No, actually. I received it as a Christmas gift and haven’t even cracked it open yet! Just had a backlog of other media I wanted to burn through before getting started.

What do you think about each installment so far? I actually felt like Rhythm of War was the weakest of the bunch, though it was still a good read. I think I liked Words of Radiance the most, followed by Oathbringer, then Way of Kings, and Rhythm of War.

Kaladin is badass but I just do not have an intimate understanding of depression. Obviously mental illness and trauma are major themes in the series regarding the Knights Radiants so sometimes Sanderson loses me there.

And that’s exactly why Adolin is my favorite character. He’s the only normal one in the bunch lol

Then I think you'll really dig book 5. I finished it a few weeks back. Overall reasonably satisfied with the series.
