I decided to keep my cat because I had someone swear to me if anything were to happen they’d take him in. He’s only 2 and I’m 30. I think about my death way too much I suppose but life goes by really quick.

I'll be 60 this year. I'm an old fat guy with a lot of the standard old fat guy health issues. My dad, who was also an old fat guy, died at the age of 67. I kind of use that age as a baseline for my own life expectancy, and 2032 really isn't all that far off at this point. I'm fine now, but all life ends and that can change in a hurry. My dead cat was fine a month ago.

In the past, the advice I've always given and followed about losing a pet is to give it a few weeks and then get another pet. I'd love to get another kitten. But now, I'm at the age where it is reasonable to assume that any kitten I get will become a cat who outlives me. Is it selfish, or even cruel, to want another pet? I mean, people understand death, but a cat who sees me hauled off in an ambulance never to return won't.

I guess I could get an older cat, but then there's the issue of whether it would get along with the two I still have. Or maybe I should just stick with the two I've got. I just don't know.

Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit morose this evening.

We've lost a lot of pets. 3 in the past year. It happens because we have a lot of pets. We take in pretty much anything if we can. It's the least we can do when there's so many pets in need.

Papi is my best friend. He spent weeks 8 and 9 of his life in ICU at Iowa State. 2.5 pound puppies don't survive parvo. But they didn't count on him being demon-possessed. And here we are.

Do what you can. It's good for them and it's great for you.

Well, it looks like we'll be adding another cat to the household. It was my original intention to wait until spring for kitten season and get an actual kitten, but our youngest, Chipper, was really bonded to the one that recently died, and he's been moping around for the past couple of weeks since his buddy went away. Casey, our oldest, is bonded to us and doesn't give a crap about Chipper one way or another (and it's mutual). So Chipper needs a new friend his own age.

We found a small, female, nearly adult kitten at the local shelter. She's on hold awaiting some bloodwork results, so the earliest we can bring her home is Tuesday. I'm hoping that because she's smaller and female Chipper won't perceive her as a threat and will bond with her quickly.

Potential new cat's current name is Cindy Lou, which will definitely change. I suggested we name her Taylor. The wife groaned and rolled her eyes, so the jury's still out on that one.

By the way, don't forget about yourself in trying to get them to get along. One of the ways you can help is to show them both attention and love so they're focused on you and not each other.

It's always a balancing act. I don't want to show so much attention to the new one that he gets jealous, although there's probably no way to avoid it. Before Apollo died I'd often get all three of them jockeying for position next to or on top of me when I went to bed, and sometimes they'd all get pissed off that the others were there and all three would jump off the bed. Cats are kind of selfish by nature.

But this new cat is mainly for him, not us. His behavior has changed over the past couple of weeks and I don't want that to devolve into anything negative/destructive. The idea of having multiple cats is for them to entertain each other, but it doesn't always work. I just hope I don't end up with three standoffish cats, because I really don't want to ramp it up to four again.

Cruised through a shelter this past week and came face to face with one of the most reactive, gamey, violent, mother****er dogs I've ever seen. Beast could leap five feet off the ground while lunge snarling and was close to escaping its enclosure. I'm expecting that any day now some pitbull-mom is going to wind up in the news requiring a face transplant. I mentioned the dog to the volunteers and they literally told me "he's just begging for lots of love". ****ing violent animal should be put down with a poison dart gun and the only thing blocking it from violence and murder are middle aged lesbians.

Say hello to Cheese, a sweet and affectionate mixed-breed dog with a heart as big as his name! This charming guy has come a long way during his time with us, transforming from a cautious and fearful pup into a friendly and trusting companion. Cheese is now a social butterfly, going from person to person with lots of wags, and soaking up all the love and attention he can get. He's great with handling, even in sensitive areas like his face, feet, and tail, making him a joy to be around. Playtime is where Cheese truly shines! He loves a good squeaky toy and is always ready to engage in some fun. While he isn't the most treat-motivated pup, a little spray cheese on a treat will have him wagging his tail in delight. Cheese has shown interest in meeting other dogs, though he's still learning the ropes of canine socialization. A meet-and-greet with any potential doggy siblings is recommended to ensure a perfect match. Cheese is ready to share his sweet and goofy personality with a family who will continue to nurture his confidence and show him the love he deserves.
