Becoming Led Zeppelin

Honestly can't remember the last movie I went to see in a theater, but I'll be going to see this one very soon

Odd how long this movie's release has been in the works, Page did press for it two years ago. Anyway, looking forward to it this month.

I wasn't aware it'd been in the works that long, that is weird

Kinda surprised its only PG-13, figured any real movie about them would feature plenty of debauchery

It opens nationwide tonight and I could drive 30 miles to see it, but I'm gonna hold out a bit and hope it makes its way to my small town soon

I figured this was just a thread about Greta Van Fleet's next album...

Seems like the sizzle around those guys is kinda fading, haven't heard much about them lately

Last I did read about them, is that they were somewhat trying to shake the Zep comparisons... but thats tough to do when their singers voice is a near match to Plant, and they play old school blues rock

It only covers the origin and early stages of the band, which will disappoint a lot of people. These guys are control freaks when it comes to managing their legacy, I imagine the excess behind the scenes won't be mixed in either.

So the first 3rd of the movie is going to be a biopic on Robert Johnson.

Yeah you're right about the legacy control thing, several recent articles I've read are pointing to it... Zep wants to memory hole the really wild tales

I'll want to watch this for sure.

I don't know how I feel knowing that there will never be another rock era or rock stars like that ever again. At least it seems very unlikely.

Yeah this thread kinda goes hand in hand with the New Music is Garbage thread

As others repeatedly pointed out in that thread, its not that great rock bands with amazing potential don't exist... its that the music industry refuses to sign, develop and get behind them the way that they used to

Without that mainstream push, new rock bands have to be totally grass roots and grow their footprint through bandcamp, spotify and all this other new age streaming nonsense... from record labels to the Super Bowl, no corporate entity gives a shit about rock n roll anymore

ya I think it's all about the people running the music industry. i have my own theories about that but there hasn't been a new rock star in a long time.

I'm sure if you searched really hard you could find something but I haven't found it.

It's not any different than Bohemian Rhapsody.

When that was rumored, I was pretty stoked. Then I saw that Brian May was pretty much leading the development and he and Taylor had something of the final editorial cut and realized "Oh, well this isn't going to say ANYTHING..."

I mean I still watched it because...its Queen. But I went into it not expecting to really get anything from it and I wasn't disappointed. The individual performances were fantastic and the movie itself was entertaining (if only about 40% accurate even for the things it WAS willing to talk about), but they sanitized everything so much that calling it a biopic was just laughable.

The biggest thing they minimized in that movie was that Freddie was a lot more promiscuous than they depicted in the movie.

With Zeppelin, there's a lot more to dig into - see my previous post. I'm expecting this to be a puff piece of the first order.

Yeah -- they kinda sidestepped and whitewashed the whole Gay scene thing with him.

The odd platonic relationship with the ex-girlfriend was the centerpiece of his relationship story in the movie.

Uh...naw, man. That's not how it went. That dude was just REALLY gay and very much enjoying the trappings of fame. Stories of his debauchery during that era would make David Bowie blush.

But by the movie's telling, he was a shy, confused guy who just loved everyone...

And again - fine. I get that the story you wanted to tell was mostly the music. But it's pretty odd to essentially turn a story about Queen into a Mercury centered vehicle and then essentially skip the elements that really defined him as a person for a decade.
