Let's Talk About the Eagles (Super Bowl 59 Discussion)

We're headed back to the Ship and will try to be the first team to 3-peat in Super Bowl history!!! Chiefs open up as 1.5 favorites over the Eagles.

We're all amazed by it and the streak will end one day... but these picks for the Eagles to win relatively easily because they're better on paper... jfc, we've talked about this, you've seen how it plays out over and over...

I think a good portion of that is for ratings. And then you’ve got a bunch of OL guys and former defensive players who are haters.

I have to check myself sometimes on that. It’s easy to forget.

The fact the Patriots guys “get” the Chiefs more consistently and believe more in them than average is telling, imo.

But if Spags knows what you're running every single down, then ohmygod. You might be in a lot of trouble. Spags is an expert at, among literally everything, forcing you to beat him lefthanded. And once Barkley is largely contained, can Hurts pull the plays out of his rear against a better defense this Super Bowl than the one he played last time? I'm skeptical. They'll have good time of possession, but I'll be surprised if the Eagles score more than 24.

The Chiefs offense meanwhile will likely have a repeat of what they did against Buffalo -- long possessions with quick passing and few punts. I anticipate the Chiefs will score almost every time they possess the ball. I think the question comes down to "field goals or touchdowns?"

And there are reasons to think it'll be field goals, right? But even then, there are counterarguments in the Chiefs favor.

The Eagles have the best run defense in the NFL, so it's going to be very hard to get Hunt/Pacheco rolling. But they weren't exactly rolling to begin with; the Chiefs are an opportunistic run team, not a team that runs to win. They'll pick their spots, and the Chiefs RBs will probably get the yards they need. And besides, if you feel you have to abandon the run game... name me one quarterback in this league who is hungrier to throw the ball every single down than Mahomes.

There isn't one. He understands the logic of running the ball, but if you told him he's going to have to pass 60 times against this Eagles defense, we all know what his answer would be.

I anticipate the Chiefs can pass the ball all over Philly, but there is one Cooper DeJean-sized consideration to make. DeJean plays McDuffie-style ball out of the slot, and the Chiefs get all their best plays in the passing game, it seems, by manipulating who they run out of the slot. I still think the Chiefs can do damage there, but they're going to have to come up with some Plan Bs, because running your best stuff against the other teams' best or second-best defender is a lot to ask. Really, really good slot CBs screw with the Chiefs plans, historically.

But I just don't care. Reid's had two weeks to prepare for this game against a defensive coordinator he knows intimately and that he's never lost to since Mahomes has arrived. They are going to gameplan to negate Jalen Carter and the edge rush. Kelce will likely have a very solid game. Hunt will see the majority of the carries and the Chiefs are going to keep moving the sticks all game.

I just think God himself couldn't keep Mahomes out of the endzone this game. I'm like 65/35 certain the Chiefs will win, and while you have to assume it'll be a one-score game, it wouldn't surprise me if the Chiefs dropped 37 points and shocked the world on their way to a threepeat.
Alot of good stuff in here but... the Eagles don't have the best Run defense in the NFL. They were 8th and gave up only 2.3 ypg less than KC per game this year and actually more on a ypc basis at 4.3 vs 4.2. That and they had enormous leads in a good portion of games that kept teams from running the ball while KC did not. We will be able to run on them if we want to.

Their vaunted defense in the playoffs, especially against the pass, has not been what they were in the regular season. They've given up at least 30 yards per game over their season average in each game of the playoffs.

The Rams had the recipe to beat their asses offensively.

I'm confident. Both of our corners can man up on their WRs. We shut down Barkley, we win going away.

If you can break the Eagles game script - keep them in 3rd and medium or longer, make them punt, and build a lead - I don’t think they have enough to get it done. Hurts isn’t good enough to win throwing when you have to throw against a good pass defense/pass rush/blitzing team.

The only way I see this being a two-score game is if that happens.

I can’t find it for the life of me but last night someone asked Belichick what he thought would happen and he pretty much said that the Eagles need to be ready to score bc Andy’s offense is so difficult to defend with Mahomes and weapons.

Specifically mentioned the bunch formations, pre-snap motions, screens, leverage and making the middle of the field so stressful for the defense due to a single play having up to 10 variations built off of it.

Bill would certainly know considering Andy put 27+ on his ass like 5 or 6 times with Alex and Patrick

I believe I heard/read somewhere that Saquon is among the league leaders in carries that go for 0-1 yards? Is that right?

Because that would surprise the hell out out of me and pretty much re-emphasizes that the key to beating the Eagles is just keeping him from busting big runs.

Or hell, only let him break ONE. If he gets a 60 yarder but is otherwise contained, we should have that offense on its heels.

Everything just seems so dependent on Barkley breaking big runs.

One thing that keeps coming up is how much zone the Eagles play and how vulnerable they are over the middle. Remember, Baun is playing LB for the first time this season and Burks is a backup. Baun has played well but if Andy has given Warner and Greenlaw fits before then what will he have up his sleeve for Baun and Burks? Juju and Kelce are gonna be huge in the middle of the field and so will Gray.

Another thing is confusing Mitchell and Dejean. Both of them can be beat and Andy will want to give them looks that make them hesitate. Because let's be real here. They are still wet behind the ears and won't have seen everything yet.

Thus week has been weird for me. Was more on edge for the Bills game but I've been at peace all week this time. No doubt reality will hit on Sunday but I just pray we see 15 in God mode on route to a victory. Leave absolutely no doubt about how great you are Pat.

Yeah, results-wise he is pretty much Barry Sanders.

2. There will be broken TV’s across Philly if the Chiefs successfully land corndog again. The fear is palpable. They are more confident in their corners and Fangio’s scheme to counter it than in 2022.

3. Surprisingly, most of the fans on Reddit now acknowledge that Bradberry held, and blame Gannon for putting them in that position.

4. With that said, they’re all giving themselves a future out that “the refs!” could keep this close and swing it to T-Swift’s team.

5. They’re terrified of their special teams costing them big in this game. On that note, they still HATE Kadarius Toney, and HATE that he was the X-factor in 57.

6. They believe the entire national media is riding with the Chiefs.

7. They believe their defense is vastly improved from Super Bowl 57. Yet, they also blame the field in Super Bowl 57 for neutralizing their D, without any thought that it could have neutralized ours.

8. They think the Chiefs D is weak vs 11 personnel. Barkley apparently has 7 YPC from this formation. They, like most commentators pulling for Philly, think Barkley and their physicality in the trenches will get them the W.

9. AJ Brown is apparently now healthier than he was during the regular season. But they have been really quiet about their passing game in comparison to the run.

10. And as stated above, they are worried about how they’ll matchup with Kelce. They’re hopeful Fangio has a plan, but would prefer to force the Chiefs to have long, grind it out drives where they can force a mistake rather than risk home runs by giving Kelce too much attention.

Very little about the success of Jones and the Chiefs D, other than admiration for Spags.
I have yet to see an eagles site where the fans are as fragile or arrogant as chiefs fans here.

The only way we lose this game is if the offense shits the bed and turns the ball over multiple times.
Jalen Hurts, 5th in quarterback rating - 103.9. Patrick Mahomes, 15th at 94.4. The perceived QB deficit in this game is vastly overblown.

Because of height discrepancies? If Dejean and TC had a contest to see who could touch higher in the backboard, Dejean would win. I understand that static height is important also, and anything can happen, but I like Dejean chances in that matchup.
