I can see why Andy elected to roll with Alex when he got here. Goddamn were the QB classes ****ing awful from 2013-2016.

Andy must have looked at the QB classes with disgust. The top QB’s drafted were Bortles, Manuel, Goff and Winston. Derek Carr is the most successful QB of those draft classes.

That’s why when you see a guy you want you move heaven and Earth to try to get him. Just not many of these guys coming into the league very often.

If he only played for Andy for one year, I might buy into that.

Andy is very much a "Hey, keep firing" coach, and he could never get Alex to pull the trigger. The closest Alex ever got to actually just playing, was the year he knew he was history with Mahomes waiting in the wings.

Even then, full choke I'm the second half against the Titans in the playoffs. Rookie Mahomes would've won that second half.

He just didn't have that "make it happen" mentality. He was a game manager through and through.

I think Alex Smith was poorly served by the NFL.

Smith won a Heisman as a spread QB for Urban Meyer at Utah in 2005. The NFL hadn't accepted the spread as a viable NFL offense.

It wasn't until 2017, when Andy Reid unveiled a spread offense , that Smith finally had a system that resembled the offense that made him a college star. The KC offense lit the world on fire for six games and Smith led the NFL in passer rating.

The next season, Smith had the Redskins in position to go to the playoffs, but then had his horrific knee injury. We only had that one season in KC to see what he could do with a system that truly optimized his abilities.

Now, he's nowhere near Mahomes. But he as a better QB than he showed for most of his career. Of course, in 2017, he was surrounded by Ferrari talent. He had future HOF receiving targets in Tyreek and Travis Kelce, two bookend tackles, plus the NFL rushing leader in then rookie Kareem Hunt.

Give him the 2023 KC defense, and maybe you could win a Super Bowl. He'd be sort of like the Brock Purdy 49ers. Course, he wouldn't be the reason you won, but he could play point guard for a talented offense.

I'd rate him behind:

Mahomes
Dawson
Montana
Trent Green
Alex

That was the thing that was so maddening about him. We all saw what he COULD do, and then for reasons nobody will ever understand, he'd just stop doing them. That five game losing streak, especially that inexcusable loss to the bottom feeding ****ing Giants, finally put me over the edge. I was thrilled the day we drafted his replacement and even more thrilled when he left for Washington.

But I'll never forget that perfect pass he dropped in to Hill in that 2017 game against New England, which was one of the best passes that I've ever seen by made by anybody, including Pat. What a great win that was, and my MIL had died that morning, so I really needed something to lift my spirits. Alex earned eternal kudos for that performance.

Yep he finally started uncorking more deep shots in 2017, but by then it was too late

Great TV analyst though. Really good. Should take ****ing Orvloskys spot.
Patrick raves about how Alex taught him How to be a QB in the NFL. There is no reason to trash Alex. He gave his all. It’s not Alex’s fault he didn’t have enough talent to lead a team to a SB. It’s the Chiefs fault for asking him to lead a team when he didn’t have that level Of talent.
